The first part of the story is pretty much accepted as fact at this point. I’m sure Gilbert can say years after the fact that they were joking and good friends, and he’s crazy enough that he might have been joking.

The part people seem to agree on was that Arenas woke up after Crittenden lost a lot of money at bourre and started shite talking the hell out of him and pissing him off.
The bit with the guns was Arenas continuing to frick with him because Crittenden was still pissed IIRC.
And I can believe Arenas thought he was joking but I doubt Crittenden was. There are some other stories out there of exactly why Arenas didn’t get drafted in the first and it had to deal with him being a smartass at the wrong time.

Everything about Arenas suggests he is someone who loves to mess with people and play pranks and shite talk, and as a result, some people respond extremely poorly to him.
As far as I remember, Arenas grew up middle to upper middle class and his dad was an actor in Hollywood (but by no means a star).
