current fifa top ten and teams status

brazil - in
spain - in
netherlands - in
italy - in
germany - in
russia - UEFA PLAYOFF
england - in
argentina - in
croatia - OUT
france - UEFA PLAYOFF
usa - in

ok, i dont see any way that we will drop in the next rankings

there are currently 7 teams ranked ahead of us that are locks, with russia and france having home and home matches. while these top seeds are not done strictly on fifa rankings, its a good gauge

what does everyone think? is there a possibility that argentina drops? i think they should

sadly, i think the loss to brazil is going to take away the top 8 seed from the yanks

Wouldn't it be top 7 with S Africa as a seed?

Keep in mind that South Africa gets a top 8 seed as well, so that makes it harder. I said earlier today that the US only gets a top 8 seed if France doesn't qualify.

Does S.A. get a group or do they just get an auto bid?

The host team is always the seeded team in Group A.

from wiki

Eight teams are seeded (including the hosts, with the other teams selected using a formula based on both the FIFA World Rankings and performances in recent World Cups) and drawn to separate groups.

Almost certainly. You know we're gonna get a Group of Death, too.

They are top 8, just like S. Korea and Japan were in 2002. That's how you got the ridiculous Belgium, Russia, Tunisia, Japan group.

How are groups determined exactly? Seeded and placed by that?

Top 8 are seeded (so they can't be with each other). After that, basically random, IIRC. So, theoretically, a group could have the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 11th ranked teams in the world in it.
