It isn't random. There is a method, but I think FIFA actually ignores it. I'll try to find the formula.

Top 8 are seeded (so they can't be with each other). After that, basically random, IIRC. So, theoretically, a group could have the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 11th ranked teams in the world in it.

Obviously. It is the only explanation to the abomination of a group they stuck the US with last time.

Here's the formula.

I don't understand how they ended up with the pools if they actually followed the formula though.

Teams 7, 9, and 16 all ended up in the same pool along with 30. In theory, it should have been 7,9, one of the teams from 17-24, and 30. So it actually could have been Portugal (a much better team) or a bunch of shitty teams.

2006 was the only bad group though, Tyler. I thought 1998 and 2002 both had reasonable draws for the US.

After the top 8, they have drawn groups in the past geographically. One bag of teams was 8 European teams, the next was CONCACAF and Asian teams, the next was the rest of Europe and Africa.

It sucked because it meant the US couldn't draw an Asian team, which as a group, suck balls.

depending on who France draws for the playoffs, I wouldnt be surprised if they fail to qualify. Not too far-fetched to think we could be a (1) seed.

Not to mention Iran did not qualify. So there's that. If somehow South Korea and North Korea made to the knockout rounds and played each other, it would epic.

Perhaps the Obamas and Oprahs would be willing to go to S. Africa and campaign for us. Sure to get top 8 with their help!

This is not a political discussion. There is a slightly better system for this, than some French and Swiss coots determining who gets the Olympics.

I don't know how they did the draw in 1998. I was tsalking about 2006. It was done geogrpahically, not be four different lines of seeds. I think it is always done geographically, but the bags change based on the number of bids.

I can recall at this point in 2006 spending way too much time trying to figure out how the pots were decided upon. It was extremely frustrating. There really wasn't an answer out there that I could find.
This really doesn't need to be top secret does it? I don't understand why it isn't readily explained on fifa.com for instance (though I haven't wasted any time looking recently).

ETA: I did just find this article explaining 2006, which confirms what Baloo was saying.
