Is the Mark Teixeira contract becoming as big of an albatross as the A-Rod deal?

He's hitting .228 this season and his batting average has been under .250 since 2010. He's been so bad that the Yankees moved him down to seventh in the order last night. Unfortunately, they owe him $112.5 million for the next five seasons so he's virtually untradeable. In a lot of ways, Teixeira's Yankee career is mirroring what Jason Giambi did in New York. Giambi had a monster first year in New York hitting 41 bombs and driving in 122 runs with a .314/.435/.598 line. However, after that first season, his BA went down the tubes and his production was inconsistent from that time on. But at least Giambi still got on base at a near .400 clip and had a .900 OPS in those last six seasons with the Yankees. Teixeira has a .346 OBP with a .822 OPS since 2012. Those are remarkably average numbers. And with his contract, the Yankees are stuck with him for the next five years. I'm just surprised everybody is focusing their attention on the crappiness of A-Rod's contract while ignoring how bad Teixeira's deal is.

Giambi is a great comparison. Giambi would at least get some clutch hits here and there. Tex on the other hand is less clutch than arod, and thats saying something.

Hopefully deals like this are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

He's always a slow starter. He still hit 39 bombs last year.

His OPS+ for the last was 124 and 119, so healthily above average.

He's not worth that monster contract, but he's still producing at a really high rate, AND he plays a great 1B.

Last season he got off to one of his best starts though... and then faded other than a slight uptick in August.

His OPS by the months:
Apr .907
May .885
Jun .854
Jul .761
Aug .812
Sep .756

So if he's starting slow this season, does not particularly bode well.

Wanna here a not really that CSB?

I work with a Teixeira who claims to be Mark's cousin. Not sure if I believe him.

The league has started to really learn how to pitch to him. That plus the bronchial infection that's been ailing him has really hurt his production. But this is still Mark Teixeria we're talking about. One of the best defensive firstbaseman in the game and he's going to hit 35+ homers and drive in at least 90. Maybe the OPS isn't there but as long as runners get on in front of him he'll be okay.

I really think the Yankees are missing Gardner. He really changes that lineup. Plus apparently A-Rod has become a singles hitter. When the entire offense doesn't seem as intimidating from top to bottom it changes the way pitchers pitch against them.
