Is the 3 year start to Barry Switzer's career the best start to a HC career?

First 3 years as a HC, Barry Switzer went 32-1-1 as head coach of the Sooners.

He won 3 conference titles and 2 National Championships. They finished #2 in the country the year they didnt win the title. He beat his main rival, Texas, all 3 years.

They beat 15 ranked teams, (7 of which were top 10 teams and 4 top 5 teams), in those first 3 years. The tie came when Oklahoma went to USC and tied them when USC was ranked #1 in the country.

And he took over a team that was on probation, so at least he left the program in the same condition he found it in. The Sooners had also lost a combined 17 games over the previous 5 seasons

Anyone know of a similar start to a college HC career?

That has to be up there. Larry Coker was pretty good in the first 3 seasons.

Bob Neyland went 25-1-2 pre AP poll era. In fact he only had 2 losses in his first 7 seasons.

Frank Leahy went 24-3-3 with a National Title.

John Robinson (USC)

Year 1 (11-1) finished #2 in the nation.
Year 2 (7-4) finished #12 in the nation.
Year 3 (12-1) finished #1 in the nation.

30-6 record going #1, #2 and #12 - not too shaby.

(and year 4 he finished #2 in the nation going 11-0-1)

Gil Dobie was 68-0-3 for his first 11 years of coaching. Never lost a game in 9 years of coaching at Washington. Gotta be some sort of record

Yeah but everyone knows Coker inherited paradise and brought it crashing down. NTM that Miami team played in the big east

I know the NFL is much different but Jim Harbaugh has had quite a start to his pro coaching career

24-7-1 in 2 seasons

Made it to the NFCCG in his first season and Super-bowl runner up in his second. They would also seem to be the odds on favorite to make it back to the big game as well

and the 49ers finished 6-10 in 2010 before his arrival

Not comparable to Switzers run but a notable good start

This thread was created in response to the former Sooner QB who played for OU in Switzer's first three years who died in a plane crash today?

Main rival back then was Nebraska not Texas.

He went 7-4 one year. So no.

Why are you using the five seasons mark? Hell, Miami also lost 17 games in the previous five seasons before Coker took over. Oklahoma finished 11-1 and #2 in the AP rankings the previous two seasons before Switzer took over. The 1971 Oklahoma team is considered one of the greatest teams not to win a national championship and played Nebraska that year in arguably the biggest college football game of the 20th century. They were the second best program in the country behind Nebraska when Switzer took over the reins. It wasn't like he didn't inherit a great program. Also, NCAA sanctions doesn't really affect the quality of a program unless scholarships to players are taken away. Oklahoma didn't lose a single scholarship when they got busted for cheating in 1973. It's not exactly comparable to Butch Davis taking over a Miami team that was stripped of 31 scholarship players.
