Is Kawhi overrated on the MSB, or not?

I can't figure the guy out. He's downright great at doing what the Spurs ask of him, and has shown up big in the finals. Can he be THE man? Could he drag the Spurs to the playoffs while having to grind it out every night during an 82 game season?

I'm ready for the Kawhi show, dammit. When's Pop gonna let him fly?!

I don't understand what you are asking. You want him to play on a worse team?

What? I don't really care that much where he plays. I'm really interested in his career and how he progresses.

I strongly believe that Kawhi is overrated. I think he is a great role player who works perfectly for the Spurs. But I also don't believe he could carry a team on his back. If he signed a huge contract with say the Hornets next year, I don't think he would suddenly become this monster player who everyone had in the MVP race.

I think Pop uses him perfectly, and I don't think he is a max player. I think Parker has been underrated in San Antonio for years, and people are finally realizing it. But I think people realizing they underrated him during his prime years has caused them to overrate the next young Spurs player. While Parker as a result of the offensive system didn't have the high assists people expect out of an elite PG, Kawhi benefits from the offense and players around him.

I truly believe that Kawhi will be exposed in some ways if Pop and Duncan retire this year.

ReauxlTide, I see exactly what you are saying. A lot of times really solid role players on great teams tend to get overrated.

Perkins (Celtics)
Ariza (Lakers)
Plenty of players for Cleveland round 1

You can only see how great a player is when he has the load to lead a team.

Yeah...exposed as one of the best defensive players in the NBA.

His usage went way up this year and he's having his best year. They're not going to force him into a lebron role so I guess you will be left wondering

Yup. And Trevor Ariza is one of the best defenders in the NBA. Doesn't mean he's a superstar. I really like Kawhi as a player. I just think he's overrated.

Cool.

"overrated" and "superstar" aren't the same thing.

If you think he is a multiple all-star then yes.

If you underestimate how valuable a SF/PF who can stretch get you 15 and 10 on any given night while playing great D is, then no.

I think this board overrates / underrates players in general. Kawaii is not an all-star but I still consider him a top 40 player in the league.

Damn I just read those paragraphs. Did you watch the spurs this year? You realize Parker isn't the same guy as last year, Kawhi has taken on more of that load and all of his numbers are up.

I don't doubt that. I couldn't imagine a situation where Pop handed 1 guy the reigns and said go win us a ship and MVP. He's gonna have his fingerprint on the way they go about everything.

But the "shite or get off the pot" day is still coming. The big 3 will be gone and something will have to give. Do you give Kawhi a max deal? I think it's a safe move but don't think he'd live up to it. The cap going up might ease decisions like this I guess.

I'd like to see him in a position to be THE man. I don't like the idea of him being, or potentially being one of the best players in the league....while seeing 30 minutes a game.

And neither are "bad" and "overrated".

Kawhi has question marks that people ignore because he isn't "the guy" yet. His field goal percentages have gone down with his higher usage. And he has never played more than 66 games.

When he gets a big contract, people will be much more critical of the flaws.

Please don't compare Kawhi to Perkins or Ariza

Yes. The Spurs suddenly got great when Parker started playing well again in March.

I didn't say they did. I mentioned role players on championship teams that people once loved for their defense and even offensive contributions at times (more Ariza than Perkins here).

I have him higher than this, but he's talked about like he's top 10 around here. At least for a few weeks a year.

Well Simmons and Lowe are referring to him as a top 10 player lately so of course overrating is coming into play.

However, I see him as a top 20 guy and a better player than Andrew Wiggins will ever be.

The max is 4/60 and the cap is about to go up. Of course you give him that contract.
