Listening to a couple ESPN2 shows (First Take, Etc) heard them compare Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Davis and say Towns is the better prospect when comparing them coming out of college. Do you agree with that, or is ESPN blowing smoke to boost ratings, considering they host the draft tonight?

I'd agree Towns has a more complete offensive skill set, but AD was far better defensively and I remember everyone almost universally agreeing he was a guaranteed all-Star

FWIW:
AD: 14.2 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 1.3 apg, 4.7 bpg, 32 mpg
Towns: 10.3, 6.7, 1.1, 2.3, 21.1 mpg

If Towns was playing 32 mpg, what would his stats be?

He's obviously not as or guaranteed to be as good as Anthony Davis. Davis has a few years in the league and has established himself.

Towns though is a freakishly good prospect.

He doesn't need to add weight like AD and he has the best FT % of any big man to enter the draft, ever. FT % is generally a good indicator of offensive capability in the NBA. Towns isn't the defender AD was coming out, AD could switch on pick n rolls his first year, not sure if Towns will be able to do that.

He's good, and has a more well rounded offensive game that Davis when he came out, but he isn't as good defensively and isn't as "explosive".

Not even close IMO.

AD had that Magic thing where he was a PG that grew late so he's huge with a guard skillset.

How can you actually watch first take?

People will be inclined to say no because Anthony Davis is an established All-Star with a few seasons under his belt.

I don't know that KAT is as good of a prospect as AD, but he's still pretty damn good.

Coming out of college, KAT had a USG% of 23.7 to AD's 18.8. AD had a higher Offensive Rating, but lower Defensive Rating than KAT.

Really? From all reports and my own eyes I would have said the exact opposite

watching first take is your first problem.

I dont see the comparisons to AD, davis was a defensive monster who sat back and didn't get involved in the offense to help the flow of the team better. I think towns has the skills to be good, but would honestly rather Oakafor bc you know what he is, he can score in the low post, will require a double team and you can figure out his defense later.

Is KAT mentally and as dedicated to the craft as what AD is and was? I don't think I see it from what i've seen of him.

So was Towns.

Stealing this from a Grantland article:

quote:

Towns can be the centerpiece of an offense one day, but he’ll also anchor a defense. He’s good enough at the rim to let a coach go small to space the floor around him with shooters. He doesn’t have the freakish guard skills of Anthony Davis, but that’s the wrong comparison. Think of the Orlando version of Dwight Howard, but with better free throw shooting and the ability to hit a face-up jumper.

AD was the better prospect because of his freakish ceiling more than anything.

Towns is the more skilled guy coming out and a bit more developed to deal with the rigors of the NBA.

The premise of your post is that the troll buffoons reading from scripts are "debating" that Towns is a better prospect than AD was.

AD was the absolute consensus #1 in that draft and a lot of people were saying "the best #1 since Lebron" or "can't miss" and all that stuff.

There's still debate on whether KAT should go #1, so I really don't see anyone comparing the two outside of First Take.

By dumb people. Chad Ford said on the radio the other day that all 30 FO's have Town's #1.

I'd say the comparison is fine because they are both bigs coming out of UK that will go #1.

So Towns numbers if he played 32 minutes per game in comparison to AD's numbers

............PTS...REB...AST...BLKS
Davis.....14.2...10.4.....1.3....4.7
Towns...15.6...10.2.....1.7....3.5

That has more to do with the other players in the draft class than anything.
