Is James harden still a terrible defender?

I don't watch much regular season basketball. Less than 10 games so far this year and none have been of the rockets. Wondering with all of the mvp talk around him is he still a liability on one end of the court

now why would you say something like that

Of course he is. He's the 2nd best player ever. Is harden even top 50?
Posted on 3/23/17 at 1:08 pm to Hawgnsincebirth55
He never was as bad as the gifs made him out to be. He's an average defender.

Westbrook is viewed as the weaker defender of the two by many.

This was in a group email I got today
Sounds pretty much like the GOAT to me
quote:
It's historic and truly an all-time great NBA season.
Harden
Leads the NBA in assists.
Leads the NBA in double doubles.
Averages:
He's averaging 29/11/8
The only man to have those averages ever also is Oscar Robertson.
Harden is doing it on 44/35/86 shooting.
With a TS% of 62%(elite).
Historic:
He had two consecutive 40 pt triple dubs on a back-to-back.
He has the most 50 pt triple doubles in a single season in NBA history (2) Including the first ever 50/15/15 game when he had 53/16/17.
The most 40 pt triple doubles in a single season in NBA history. (7)
Harden currently is averaging the most points produced per game in NBA history and is on pace to have the most points produced in a single season in NBA history.
He's averaging 56.7 points produced per game.
Points produced via points+assists
No player has produced more on a per game basis.
The second most is Wilt Chamberlain with 55.2 points produced per game in his 50 pt avg season in 1961-1962.
Wilt finished that season with 4,416 points produced that season.
Harden has already accounted for 4,025 of the Rockets points 71 games into this season.
In all... Elevating his team to a top three record in the league Harden should be MVP because he has his team exceeding expectations more than anyone.
He's had the most impressive performances of the season.... More than anyone and it isn't close.
He's also produced more for his team than anyone.... And he's done it more efficiently than anyone else in the conversation.
Sounds pretty much like the GOAT to me

I never mentioned Westbrook he's not apart of this discussion. Just asked if harden is any good

russ has better defensive metrics than harden essentially across the board

Harden is underrated defensively. He's strong enough to defend bigger players in the post. He isn't blessed with the most lateral quickness but his strength offsets some of that.

Isn't Westbrook dead last in the league at expected fg% of the man he's guarding?
Ie the player he guard shoot higher when Westbrook is 'guarding' him than any other player In the league?
A lot of defensive metrics are influenced heavily by team defense so you can toss some of those out.

Westbrook is average as well on that end. The one think I do like about Harden and Westbrook is that they will at least matchup with the other teams stud PG. Curry hides from them.

Maybe it was an anomaly, but at the last Pels/Rockets game I saw nearly every defensive Harden staple:
- The fast break ole'
- The swipe at the ball on lane penetration from behind/there goes my man
- The backdoor "where'd he come from" cut
- The wide open "James' man" 3.
I'm sure he was just having one of those games, but it was one of the most noticeably poor defensive efforts I'd seen from an opponent.

throw out all of the metrics that disagree with me and only discuss the one that does. classic boom

Only in big games.
