I would venture to say that the reason Houston isn't considered a big sports market, even though they are population wise, is because they are all 'new' teams. The Rockets don't fall in this category because they have had well known players and have won championships and have been around for awhile. The Texans are a relatively new team, plus the Oilers were loved so it took some time to get over them. The Astros are a lot like the Rangers, never could get a huge following until recently, except the Astros weren't able to keep up their success which killed their teams popularity.
Our owners have hurt the city quite a bit. Bud Adams was really terrible. The Oilers were loved by the city. They lost the NFL and then the Texans were awful for a decade.
The Rockets have been snake bitten in recent years with injuries but they have a good owner that is willing to spend money to win and The Dream is a god in Houston.

The Astros have had a pretty cheap owner that destroyed the farm system and put the franchise back years as he was looking to sell.
Overall it is a good sports town but there are a lot of Oil and Gas people not from Houston.
If you look anywhere, then you'll find big markets that don't love all of their teams. The Clippers and Dodgers have been a joke even though they're a big market. Winning does matter. Saints fans had bags on their heads not too long ago. The Dallas Mavs were a joke before Cuban. The Rangers were awful for years and not popular. Having owners like Jerry and Cuban has helped Dallas. Having Bud Adams and Uncle Drayton hasn't exactly helped Houston.

Nooooooope.
He must not be from LA. Blackouts were a Sunday reality in the state for quite some time.

-6 World Series titles
-8 Cy Young's
-12 Rookie of the Year's
-World record for single game baseball attendance; the prior record was also held by the Dodgers
-Top 3 in cap sells since they started counting

How many stabbings?
How many people cursing the McCourts?
What do you get when you combine all 40 Los Angeles Dodgers with 40 lesbians?

You're right though, they do sell a lot of tickets. The ownership combined with the crowd they attracted was not what this franchise should have become. The owner was awful.

I'm sure Houston is a very big soccer market.

It is hard to be that close to Mexico and have that many international oil and gas employees without having a strong soccer following. Obviously the Dynamo isn't a world class team, however the stadium is pretty nice and it is a good time.

Not just as many non-Texan fans as Texan fans but if you go to a bar on Washington on a Sunday there's a huge minority of "other teams fans." That being said, I would bet if you went to any random bar (so like, not going to Legends in NYC) in any other large city you would see a similar result.

Houston is a huge college football town though. LSU, UT, Aggie are all huge. Losing the Oilers had a huge impact on pro football fans in the city.

Between a bunch of championships and the best stadium on earth... he's done ok. He gets involved too much but it isn't like he's Donald Sterling.

According to MLB, the Astros are a big market team (even if they aren't fielding big league talent). In 2014, they will no longer receive the revenue sharing that they have been getting -- thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement. The will be lumped in with the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, etc.
