Is Clemson a bigger underdog than Texas was vs. USC that season?

I recall reports that USC team might be the best college team ever, but it seems like Vince Young's presence gave Texas a chance.

Not saying Clemson will pull off the upset, just wondering.

I was fairly young for the USC UT game but I don't remember USC being some huge favorite. I remember them being favorited but people weren't just assuming USC would destroy them.

Like I said, I was young. I was pulling for Texas and liked Vince Young so I guess I don't remember being completely shocked when Texas won.

SC was going for 3 in a row and considered huge favorite.
Plus it was a de facto home game.

I has UT winning as well. I was lucky enough to see them live vs TT earlier that year and had watched a lot of games (my best friend is a UT guy). All the experts and everybody I knew assumed USC easily

Texas had some big breaks.

They played there the year before Mack kept same schedule and sites. They were comfortable.

The Bush lateral, wished I knew what he saw.

Alabama was largest favorite in BCS history over Notre Dame at -9.5.

IMO..2004 and 2008 were better teams than 2005. That D wasn't that good............

This game won't be close to as good a game as USC/Texas.. Bama's D is too good.. Watson will make some plays but IMO Bama will overpower them... MSU was NOT a bad team at all... Bama could have named the score that night.....Clemson is in for a world of hurt come Monday night... Kinda like the Bama /ND game of a few years ago.......

ESPN did like a 20-30 day program where they compared USC to all the top other national champs and i think only 01 Miami was given an argument

Stopped reading right there....Its like saying the 2003 SC team was better than the 2003 LSU team... 2005 USC was a good team. Not great by any means... They were touted as great because of how good the 2004 team was and who was coming back.... Plus in 2004 AU would have given them a better game than Oklahoma did........

Because offense sells.

USC was #1 in total offense that year.
Texas was #2.

USC was #60 in total defense that year.
Texas was #14.

Texas defense was way underrated that year. They gave Vince the ball and a short field after stopping a 4th and 1.

Clemson/Bama doesn't have near the hype.

We definitely had some big breaks, but the same can be said for USC. The Aaron Ross fumbled punt return to start the Horn's very first drive didn't help. We held USC to a 3 & out to start the game...fumble the punt...and then BAM. A few plays and it's 7-0. The Bush lateral certainly didn't help USC either. Let's not forget the biggest play though. USC had the ball...4th & 2 with a chance to win. Convert the first down and the game is over. He was stuffed and everyone in the stadium, myself included, knew VY was winning that game.

Hook 'em Horns .

Check out how even the stats were:

First Downs
USC - 30
Texas - 30

Passing Yards
USC - 380
Texas - 267

Rushing Yards
USC - 209
Texas - 290

Total Yards
USC - 574
Texas - 556

Turnovers
USC - 2
Texas - 1

Possession
USC - 19:20
Texas - 17:19

Largest Lead
USC - 12
Texas - 9

The game was a toss up to anyone who actually paid attention that year and didn't only go by what they saw on Sportscenter. Texas was a more complete team with a better defense, and was more dominant during the season. The OSU game in the Shoe was close and the A&M game was semi-close and that was it. They spotted Okie State like 3 TDs and still ended up winning by like 3 TDs.

And VY was unstoppable.
