(CNN)Beijing is set to become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics after it was chosen to stage the 2022 Winter Games.
International Olympic President Thomas Bach confirmed Beijing, which hosted the Summer Games in 2008, had been chosen ahead of Almaty in Kazakshtan at the 128th IOC session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Friday.
"I am so excited. This is China's pride," Zhang Hong, China's women's 1,000m speed skating gold medal winner at the Sochi Games, told CCTV.
Only Beijing and Almaty had been left in the running after Oslo, Munich and Stockholm bowed to public pressure and decided not to pursue plans to host the winter sports showpiece.

Well that's one way to solve a bit of the overpopulation problems in that country

can't wait to see how China figures out how to cheat this time around

Almaty was a damn near perfect choice. However, I figured it would be Beijing since they already had the stadiums in place.
But Almaty was perfect for winter sports.

How? Their infrastructure is nowhere near good enough and their visa situation would price out nearly everyone.

they need to start having these countries host more than once when selected.

So it's going to be at least 22 years since the U.S. last hosted an Olympics.

if they do, i hope it's a multi-city bid.

4 or 5 city rotation for each olympics... it's widely known that they are losing money for the host cities as a one-time event.

Maybe they should select a couple of permanent host sites for the Olympics rather than holding hostages all these cities for two weeks and putting the burden on taxpayers to build venues that will no longer be used once the games are over.

If they did that no one would have any incentive to bribe them once the permanent host sites were chosen.

I was hoping for Almaty, but I understand it had some issues.

Is it winning if nobody else wanted it?

Lets hope it is a lot more than that

The US really doesn't have to spend that much hosting since the infrastructure is there. Most just don't want to host because it basically shuts the city down for 2-3 weeks.

True to an extent, but there are still some completely worthless facilities that need to be built at big cost and people in more advanced democracies are getting wise to the fact that it does not boost the economy overall and is nothing more than a scam.
ETA for the Winter games there is probably more that has to be built.

And the city of Beijing will have hosted an Olympics twice in 14 years
