Betting on your own team while you're the manager has to be the biggest offense possible when it comes to current players/managers gambling on games. No fricking way that should be condoned. Under any circumstances

This is just a conclusion. Tell us why you think this.

I'd say betting on your own team is much worse since you have much more control

If you're in deep and owe the mob a lot of money, you can then cause your team to lose and tell them to bet against you, all without placing a bet yourself.

I would consider giving inside information to a mobster to the effect of "bet against the Cincy Reds tonight" to be functionally equivalent to betting against them yourself.

But again, this is just a scenario you're proposing. Is there any evidence it happened? And if there isn't, then assume he didn't for purposes of the question.

This is a very surprising thread coming from you, a seasoned gambler.
You should know the ramifications.

Hmmm, not following you here. I do gamble myself, but I don't see how it's relevant to Pete Rose.

I can't tell if you are being obstinate or just don't get it but unless he bets on his team every, single day, it does send a message, intential or not, to the bookies that know who he is. Clearly as a manager he has more control and he could do things that might not be in the best interest of the team overall to help him win his bet. But what matters most that you seem to be over looking is that since roughly 19freaking20, 40+ years before Rose took the field MLB made it EXPRESSLY KNOW TO ALL PLAYERS that they were not allowed to gamble on baseball. No gray area that betting on your team to win is ok, simply DO NOT BET ON BASEBALL. He violated that and lied about for decades, he deseves what ever punishment he gets.

The Legend of Pete Rose far surpasses the actual player Pete Rose. Let's be honest, Pete was a very good but not great player.

Sure he is the career hits leader but he did it over 23 seasons. He played power positions (1st,3b,OF) with avg to below avg power and few SBs. he was an avg defender.

Just saying he achievements are more on the quantity side then the quality but baseball seems to reward quantity over quality. He should NOT even be in the same room with the all timers like Ruth, Mays, Gehrig, Gibson, Koufax, Bench, Gordon, etc

Huh? Baseball is not only about power hitters. He averaged almost 200 hits per season until the twilight of his career. Runs scored per season is also very high. He career batting average is above .300

This is how I've always felt. I really don't care if he bet against the Reds or not. He placed many bets as a player and manager over a long period of time. It was clear that gambling was and is a huge no-no and would result in a lifetime ban. Lying about it was for years is just the icing on the cake.

Still no.
Makes a difference anyway, especially when he was managing. Use up the bullpen today or pay an injured player to ace that bet.

screw pete rose. If he would have been contrite from the beginning and admitted to things I imagine stuff would be a lot different for him, he would not be in the hall but he may have been able to be more a part of the game. The denials for decades and along with those denials came some vitriolic stuff towards MLB.

Betting on the game is a major sin in MLB. He will never get into the HOF and thats ok with me.

I'd argue with you, Bobby Ray, but you haven't made one decent argument (from you -- I'm shocked).
