I don't understand. What are the ulterior motives if he's betting on his team to win?

He was dealing with some extremely seedy people. Who's to say they weren't paying him directly to throw a few games when he wasn't betting on his own team to win?

If the mob has the coach of a professional sports team in its pocket, you can bet (no pun intended) that they're going to use him.

Switched up the terminology on myself.

So yeah, betting on your team is slightly better than betting on the other team. But it's also like 1a and 1b. Once you have a manager betting on games it's much easier for outside forces to control the games. It's a huge slippery slope because you don't know who else that manager could end influencing

I loved watching Pete Rose play baseball while I was growing up.... There is a reason they called him Charlie Hustle. Seemed to be the all-American kind of guy that played the game the way it was supposed to be played.. And he was damn good... A very key factor of the Big Red Machine of the 70's.... I was very upset when I found out he bet on Baseball as a manager.. BUT yet I still thought he should be in the HOF as far as a player... BUT IF he bet on the game at all while he was playing and games he was involved in, I can't accept....

The fact that his big red machine teammates don't like him at all also speaks for what kind of guy he is.

If you're in deep and owe the mob a lot of money, you can then cause your team to lose and tell them to bet against you, all without placing a bet yourself.

I think the biggest reason he wants in the HOF so bad and is he lobbying so hard for it is because he probably has some huge bet with a someone that he will be able to get into the Hall. Dude has some major cash riding on this

You can also do all that and still place a small bet on your team to win to throw people off and have a built in excuse in case your gambling is ever exposed

He's a proven liar, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Second of all, even betting on your own team has ramifications. Let's say Joe Torre bet on the Yanks at -3.5 runs. If the Yanks were up by 4, you're damn right he'd roll Rivera out there whereas if he didn't bet he probably wouldn't waste Rivera on a game that's already won.

I guess my confusion is, when listing or talking about the best of the best, I don't ever hear Rose's name come up, so i'm not sure what you're arguing to be honest.

Not arguing anything. I said Pete Rose is not an all time great. I think his notoriety creates sort of a legendary figure.

He is a mid tier HOFr based on his on field performance. IMO, the fact that he is shady as frock is enough for me to be ok with him never be in the HOF.

I would definitely say he wasn't in the top 5 all time in any of the positions he played (maybe not even in the top ten).

Baseball is big on career quantity though. He played for a really long time at a high level and stayed very healthy.

so you're saying that getting 200 hits a year for 10 years and 100 hits a year for 23 years, and 7 years with a hitting streak of 20 or more games, and a hitting streak of 44 games just means he was a very good player.

Just because he played for a long time don't discount what he did. He played at a high level for 24 years. His lifetime average was .303 Give me a break.

Quick question did you ever see him play? If you ever did you wouldn't question that he was an all time great.
