After being misidentified by a major newspaper as having made racist remarks during a high school basketball game, an announcer has won a $25 million judgment in court.
Scott Sapulpa, an Oklahoma-based high school basketball announcer, won the verdict Monday—with the court ordering Gannett, the owner of The Oklahoman, to pay him $5 million in actual damages and $20 million in punitive damages.
Sorry can’t link article from phone.

Can't wait for the "we need tort/lawsuit reform" and "lawfare' types to comment.

The other commentator came in hot.

shouldn't have tried that in a small town

Norman went on to beat Midwest City, 53-40
and then won the state championship a few weeks later

Still here. No one deserves $25M because they were called a racist.

And the article was only up for 2 1/2 hours until it was corrected to ID the announcer that actually made the comments.

frick The Oklahoman. That's the worst pos rag of paper I've ever seen. They became so unpopular outside of OKC that they basically don't even distribute outside OKC anymore.

The bigger problem was that other news outlets picked up the story, and ran with it long after the original story was pulled.
In the end it doesn’t matter. The whole tone of the original article was to put the commentator on blast and to call him out. They should have at least gotten the right guy before dragging him through the mud. It doesn’t matter if they only dragged him for a few hours. The damage was done.

Still here, this is ridiculous, but goddamn it's nice to see the idiot mob lose.

This sucks for him, but that seems like a ton of money for an article that was only up for 3 hours?

Did you read the article? This isn’t like the Kansas City “blackface” ordeal.

Gannett would know because they’ve punished every small town newspaper they could get their hands on.

Following the verdict on Monday, Sapulpa said he felt “numb,” NonDoc.com reports. “My kids, their last name is cleared, too,” he said between tears.
$25MM doesn’t clear your name, it just makes you wealthy.

Rowan then admitted it was him, and he was named in the article at 5:35 p.m. He would later claim he made the comments because he is diabetic.

We do. Why do you feel the need to only call out hypocrisy in one direction? Is it because conservatives typically don’t find value in trial lawyers that believe they’re basically Antonin Scalia?

Exactly

Agree about the 25 mil part. However, for a non black, being called a racist in today's climate is as bad as being called treasonous. Moreso if you weren't part of the Jan 6 witch hunt. Perceived racists get worse treatment around town than the Uvalde police.

I bet it will make other publications think twice before they libel someone.
