How ahead of its time was Oregon's Harrington Heisman campaign in 01?

You have harbaugh trying to move michigan spring practices to florida. You have everybody hiring all the support staff they can find. Schools are making moves to try to increase the stipends they can give to players. Camps, clinics, 7 on 7s, etc are all pushing the boundaries with each passing year.

Yet, for some reason...we've only seen one instance of such a grandiose gesture in the same city the Heisman is presented, and it was 15 years ago. You'd think that that would have opened the floodgates, but instead it's just a footnote. For some reason, I am fascinated by this. Oregon spent $250,000 on this billboard in Times Square before the 2001 season started (which seems like chump change these days). The year before in 2000, JH completed 53% of his passes for less than 3,000 yards, 22 TDs and 14 INT.

It blows me away that nowadays we see coaches and teams doing everything their brains can possibly think of to get an edge, yet we haven't seen a repeat of this. Why is that?

buying media coverage via paying the "right" PR firms a similar amount gets a lot more bang for your buck

How so?

I'm not disagreeing, just asking for clarification. I know that now there are soooooooo many more media outlets to promote yourself than there were in 2001, so that's a given. But it just seems like a massive, full length billbaord in times square is like "THE" advertising tool a school could target, but it was done once then forgotten.

The Harrington billboard was less about him and the heisman and more about trying to make Oregon a more national brand.

I'd assume it was the total lack of results. How many turrible 250k money wasting ventures have you repeated?

I can totally see that. Of course I would never expect alabama or USC to do something like that. I'm just surprised that SOMEBODY hasn't had the desire to do it since.

I doubt many people GAS or even paid a passing interest to oregon football prior to then, but that was a pretty big talking point that offseason.

And I posted JH's 2000 stats above, they were nothing special. Yet he was in teh heisman race all of 2001. I'd say it accomplished what oregon set out to accomplish.

Their gimmicky arse uniforms and actual wins have increased their stock much more than this advertisement.

They backed it up too. Oregon was damn good in 2001. They would have won the AP title of Nebraska beat Miami.

If he would have changed his name to Joe, he'd still be playing today. Can't take a Joey seriously.

I realize the truth in your statement about if Nebraska had beaten Miami, but damn if I didn't chuckle out loud at the thought of that actually happening.

They should've been in the title game and I still believe they would've made it a game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't 2001 also the first year of their gimmick and unconventional uniforms? If I'm not mistaken, I remember Akili Smith in the late 90's wearing their older, more traditional uniform.

How does putting up a poster in Times Square win you a national title?

They were unveiled in 1998 during the bowl game, first worn in 1999
