Has there ever been a more uninspiring NASCAR season than this one?

I don't see nearly as many NASCAR related threads as I recall in the past. What's led to their demise from a once booming sport in the late 90's, early 2000's?

I didn't even know the season was active until my dad said something the other day.

Yeah, I hear you. I feel that's the overall sentiment.

Yep, I told my wife that after this season Im not watching, but I know I will. I just record the race and fast forward through all of the long green flag stretches where nothing happens. I get through a race in 45 minutes now.

The past couple of years, there were at least fights and arguments to get excited about. Jeff's retirement and how he almost one was also pretty exciting. This year, the closest thing is the manufactured argument between Denny and Jimmy this week. Last nights race was horrible, as many rain delay races are. Phoenix and Miami arent the most excited tracks either.

The new rules package for next year should help as cars will handle not as well and should create more passing (which was supposed to happen next year). The Chase also needs a night race in the last round and a road course somewhere in it.

They went for wine and cheese in a sport that is hot dogs.

The Chase is pure horseshite and why I quit watching. They change the rules every year. They never should have abandoned their roots.

There are numerous factors but ultimately I think it has a lot to do with the people who run NASCAR.

Let's face it, NASCAR is a "good ole boy" sport. The powers that be have been trying to shed that image by attempting to transform it into an international brand. That's not NASCAR. That's Formula 1. NASCAR is Dale Earnhardt, it's Richard Petty, it's Dale Yarborough, it's the Alabama Gang. Those are the kind of drivers NASCAR fans want to see. I know he's been off the circuit for a few years but fans don't want to see drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya. And they're probably not big fans of drivers like Danica Patrick.

I also think the economic downturn of 2008 has had something to do with declining attendance. Most NASCAR fans work blue collar jobs and no longer have the money to afford cross country trips to watch these races in the flesh. Their biggest priorities right now consist of paying the bills and keeping food on the table to feed their families.

I have more or less stopped watching everything other than the restricter plate races (which are worse than ever), bristol, and the road courses.
It's so freakin boring now. Too many rules and the cars cost too much so the owners won't let the drivers be aggressive with them.

When they went from manufacturer base chassis to the "CoT" it started to drop off the cliff... Also Jimmy dominating the first 4 or 5 years of CoT didn't help.

It's amazing how ahead of the curve the 48 team were when the CoT was introduced... or is it?

The chase is kind of gimmicky but I think it helps when competing against NFL. But there is no excuse for them to drop so much during the spring/ summer.

Thoughts:

I've enjoyed many of the races actually. Some great finishes.

Yesterday, as with most Dallas and Atlanta, races was terrible.

I like the Chase.

I'm just speaking for myself here. I don't really know exactly when I lost interest but it was around the time of Brian France, the COT, Jr. leaving DEI, Toyota coming in, and JJ's streak. I went to Bristol in '06 and 'dega in '07 so I was still a fan then.

Nowadays I just don't care. I never know which network is carrying the race. (BTW, when one you fricktards starts a race thread on the MSB how about putting the network in the thread title like everyone does for stick-and-ball sports?) I tried to watch a race sometime during the summer and there were so many commercials I just turned it off. They even do a split/screen with commercials on one side and the race on the other and the announcers act like they're doing me a favor for it.

I'm sorry but I just find NASCAR boring these days.

I don't have any solid evidence to back this up, but I agree. It was like a faucet being shut off.

While other sports rocked along and recovered, NASCAR has not gotten back.

I watched some pre-game show about what its like to be a driver.

reminded me of the Olympic coverage. I think its designed for women.

I still like the races when I catch them.

The constant changes to the season format has made me lose interest in following the season as a whole, though.

Priorities man.

This election has got a lot of folks readjusting their lives. Watching box cars take circle laps for hours just doesn't seem to fit into the big picture as much anymore.

eta: Rally races are a jillion times more exciting and fun to watch. I love rally cars.

I think there is a ton of reasons that Nascar popularity has fallen off a cliff. Here are some of the top of my head.

Cookie cutter mile and half tri-ovals are boring and there are too many of them.

The sport was dominated for half a decade by Jimmie Johnson who is a great driver but horrible person to have dominating your sport. He is extremely boring and not an interesting personality. Now the most popular driver (Jr.) is really good but not great so if he's not winning people tune out.

The season is too damn long. They can't compete on Sunday with the NFL and should quit trying.

The COT turned it into IROC where the cars all looked the same and looked nothing like production cars.

ESPN drives interest in sports and they have no reason to push a sport they don't show on their channels anymore. They spend more time on NHL highlights than they do Nascar.

and finally.
