Has there ever been a "cupcake" that was dangerous because of D and not O?

When power house teams plays early games against lower teams, the upset watch is almost always because the cupcake has some weapons on O and a good QB. JSU, App state, ndsu, etc

Has there or will there ever be one of these lower teams that are dangerous because of talented defenses?

No and no. There are only so many schemes you can run on defense. There really isn't a gimmick to be had.

Troy has been there before with guys like Demarcus Ware, Osi Umenyiora, Leodis Mckelvin, etc. I know they beat a top 25 Mizzou lead by Brad Smith and held them to 14 points

Sam Houston St. still finds a way to laugh at this honestly.

Interesting question.

Not as likely, because the bigger schools will have more muscle on the line. Especially in terms of depth.

Whereas on offense you can kind of scheme around a more physically opponent.

Hard for an inferior team to be as successful defensively against a stronger team if they can just power through them.

Maybe someone can provide a good example of a lower tier program with a dominant D.

This doesn't quite count but
Aranda's first season with Utah St (Not the tier you are talking about) they went 11-2 in the WAC.. their one loss versus BYU was 6-3..

And their other loss to Wisconsin was 16-14

Wisconsin was ranked.. and they were in it and BYU is typically a superior program to them and they only gave up 6 in defeat..

They also beat a ranked Louisiana Tech team that season.

And they won their bowl game big and only gave up 15

NDSU held Iowa to 231 total yards and 34 yards rushing. That's some pretty stout D.

North Dakota State is the only one I can think of with a stout defense, but their offense is pretty damn good as well.

Desert Swarm is the answer as Arizona was a "cupcake" then. They did not get ranked until 1993.

I know TCU is a P5 school now, but they were mostly winning with defense in C-USA and the MWC.

To be fair, Tech got screwed that year when the hurricane took their bye week away. They lost two or three at the end of the season to general fatigue. Then a whole debacle with the athletic director and missed bowl opportunities. Such a sad, anticlimactic end to the year...

Kansas beat #1 Oklahoma 23-3 in 1975 (Oklahoma had won 28 games in a row) and Kansas didn't throw the ball once. Kansas D averaged giving up 1.3 Tds per game.

Oklahoma went on to win the National Championship.

Kansas near the bottom of the Big8 at 4-3 per usual.
