Has any college football program fallen harder than Southern Miss?

They used to be really solid then made one bad hire and went to complete shite

I also don’t think it helps that their recruiting footprint got flooded with new FBS programs like South Alabama, Georgia Southern, etc. when they had a monopoly on overlooked players in that region 20 years ago

A very low pedestal to fall from to say they’ve fallen hard…

Didn’t USM just beat the top ranked G5 team last season?

Money buys success these days and money is the one thing Southern Miss doesn’t and will never have.

That’s why it’s so funny to see people oooh and aaah at James Madison’s transition success. They pull in over 30 million dollars a year from Student Fees and have an athletic budget over 60 million

You give Southern Miss 30 million in additional revenue and watch what happens.

How about that one time Tulane went 12-0 in 1998, then made one bad hire that took 25 years to overcome?

Yeah they did win last year but Tulane has beaten them 3/4 with none of them being close.

I don’t think it mattered as much back in the day, or maybe they just overcame their lack of money. USM is going to keep falling in that hole if they can’t compete in NIL

Ellis Johnson killed that program. He was an elite DC at South Carolina and just complete crap at Southern Miss.

It's almost forgotten now, but Ty Willingham nearly killed the Washington program after going 0-12 his final season.

It's really a miracle Sark did what he did there to pull them out of the abyss that they were heading into.

There are a few things that hurt Southern Miss. One, getting rid of Jeff Bower. Wait my bad, he "resigned". The other was the separation of P5 and G5. This is where they got left behind and begin having trouble even competing with ole miss and State for in-state recruits after being picked through by bama or LSU. Third, the conference expansions where a lot of decent CUSA teams upgraded to better conferences. The only thing left for Southern Miss was to join Sun Belt.

Southern Miss should have tried their damnedest to get to the AAC 10 years ago when Cinci, Houston, and UCF left.
