Has a P5 school ever fired a coach in September?

I mean based on performance and not off the field stuff.

I'm sure it's happened, but it is rare at the top programs to fire a coach mid-season much less in September. The few examples I can recall all had significant off the field baggage or rumors.

Lane was fired by USC after 5 games. Not sure when those games started but I think it was either Sept or early October

Arkansas fired Jack Crowe after the Citadel beat them in week 1, I think. Early 90's
eta: it was '92... Joe Kines took over and beat #4 UT in Neyland a month later.

Didnt Illinois fire their guy last year like a week into the season? Or was it the week before it started?

well he wont be let go in september but if we lose this weekend then he is basically fired. we aren't beating any top team if we can't beat helpless auburn

They fired their coach a week before the season for mistreating players. Then they appointed an interim, signed him to a 2 year deal in November, then fired him 4 months later

Had to look. Tommy Bowden stepped down (fired) Oct 13th in which he recommended Dabo as the Interim Coach. Best coaching move he ever made at Clemson.

You weren't familiar with Jack Crowe at the time. It just wasn't happening.
He did come back and coach at Jacksonville (the one in Alabama) for a long while
