he'll frick it up
reggie would hit that big play, but trying to hit that big play too often made him an ineffective player
that's gus johnson...always going for the big call and making listening to him call a game a miserable experience, except the rare time he hits a rare/exciting call

Frankly, we don't believe Gus anymore. He has gotten more and more screamy, a celebrity gimmick artist, and less of a person who, you know, tells you what's going on in the game. He loses track of what's going on, he misses obvious points, and he's rather obviously just waiting for the next moment to scream, the next moment to take his moment in the spotlight.
quote:
Last night, it was plain and clear that Gus hadn't done a lick of research on either Illinois or Indiana. He consistently got players' names wrong, lost track of the score, and kept saying Illinois was switching into a zone even though coach Bruce Weber (much to the annoyance of Illini fans) infamously refuses to play a zone.
quote:
He is, essentially, a hired gun of hot air, sort of the Jeff George of broadcasting. Watching a Gus Johnson game anymore is like taking whippets: There's an immediate, quick high, but it's gone instantly and all you've done is kill a bunch of brain cells really fast. Gus Johnson worked for the NCAA Tournament because no one knows those teams very well anyway, and it's an event watched mostly by casual fans, watching their first college basketball games of the year. They want the artificial sweeteners, because otherwise, it's just one team from Louisiana playing another team from Oregon. But that doesn't work outside the tournament. These days: It's all about Gus, and only about Gus.
Thanks for the takedown, New York Magazine. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Y'all mad that your favorite announcer can't make the game as exciting as Gus? Gus is the GOAT

If you need Gus Johnson to make games interesting, then do us all a favor and stop watching and stop ruining it for everyone else.

If you need New York magazine to shepherd your opinions....

New York magazine is just stealing my thoughts from 2011 anyway

I've been saying it for 5 years, but I'm not as eloquent or credible as Will Leitch, the guy who also ran Deadspin forever.

i don't think i knew him 5 years ago, which is probably for the best

I actually agree with everybody in the thread - on both sides.
this is why soccer will be great for Gus, because you can't manufacture excitement for soccer on more than a few runs; it has to come organically... that's why hE'lll be at his best when calling action on the pitch, mates.

The problem with Gus and Johnson is that he does not know anything about soccer. It is embarrassing.
He provides nothing except loud noises and mispronounces some of the names of the best players in the world. Imagine if Collinsworth had no idea what the difference was between 3-4 and 4-3 defenses or how to pronounce Drew Brees, that is Gus in soccer.

I was playing madden 12 the other day and he pronounced captain munnerlyn, captain "mewnerlyn"

Gus has been terrible for soccer so far. He knows very little about the sport/players and starts yelling every time the ball gets near the box. Give me Ray Hudson or Ian Darke any day.

5 years ago Gus was doing Bills/Texans games on CBS and he was acting like he was broadcasting the last 5 minutes of the Super Bowl. I got off that bandwagon before he even started.
I'm glad he's down to Fox doing shitty Big 12 games nobody watches. I can avoid him much easier.

I like Gus - he's different.
I also like Brian Griese - how many commentators would say a coach needs to be fired, like he said about Illy's coach.

Bring up any announcer in sports, and there's some segment of the listening population that says he's awful.
It's fine if you don't like Gus Johnson, but some people just have to be on the dissenting end of everything.

I think Gus is great. Makes the game more exciting to watch.

Screaming over every first down does not make the game more exciting to anyone with a brain. People with brains understand how to put plays in proper perspective. What he does is insert himself over what is really happening in the game and cheapens the real good stuff because he lacks any context or perspective

He's made great strides - c'mon you know that.
