another difference is that when you take a break on the sidelines during the heat, you're getting a little bit of a break from the extreme nature. taking a break in this kinda is hardly a break.

taking a break is dangerous in that cold because you aren't moving around.

the only way to remotely stay warm is to be on the field running around the entire time.

did you read the weather alert PJ? This isn't normal playoff football

as someone else mentioned, this would be the equivalent of an august LSU football in baton rouge when the temperature is 125

I would compare 95 to 105 degree summer heat to playing football in about 25 degrees….we're talking about a SEVENTY FIVE DEGREE temperature difference

potentially -50 wind chill

Isn't wind chill an apparent temperature calculation, like heat index? I'm not sure, but I think so. And, Louisiana has seen a heat index of about 120 just a few years ago.

Basically, yes

eta: but the difference is that they weren't playing a football game in that temperature

I'm sure a football game has been played in a very high heat index. And, it is just as dangerous. Even in practice, they are raising their body temperature through activity/exercise/training/playing football. You are adding to that heat you are already experiencing. In colder weather, your activity is combating it at least a little.

Look, I don't think the conditions are safe. I'm just responding to the person who said you can't die of heat stroke during football practice, which is clearly not true.

i bet nobody in this thread has experienced anything below 20, much less below -20. there aren't enough layers in the world to keep fans warm.

Last night in NYC it was 5 degrees and that's the coldest weather I've been in.

I couldn't even imagine standing outside for hours when it's 40 degrees colder than that. I quit smoking my cig halfway because I was freezing my arse off.

Think about the weather difference if it's 50 degrees outside and if it's 100 degrees.

Now think how cold 0 degree weather is, then go the 50 degrees colder.

Holy shite

I think we need to distinguish wind chill and actual temperature.

has to be a low scoring game, right?

will probably be tough to kick also.

most kicks will probably look like knuckle balls.

Weather Update:

But now there’s hope for the 49ers, and for anyone who will voluntarily or involuntarily expose themselves to those elements. The revised forecast shows a high temperature of one degree. The hour-by-hour forecast shows that the temperature at kickoff of 3:40 p.m. CT is expected to be between one and zero degrees, with a wind chill near 20 below.

Thank god the Saints didn't get that 5th seed. The game would have been a disaster.
