Maybe 100 years back, but no way right now

Had it happened a long time ago, it might have captured a new age audience. It's just a mega fight and... That's it. As it stands, I don't really even want to watch it much less for $100.
UFC has got me all tied up.

i said this in another post...
boxing needs the grassroots more than anything... i'd go to fight cards in the NOLA area but I never hear of any. they can't have big fights if they don't have the smaller fights to lead up to that

Boxing will need another Tyson like golf with Tiger

Manny years to late..........
Boxing will never be good again while the boxers are the ones deciding who they defend those titles against. Boxing used to be great, but it's turned into a duck and run sport now.

This. The structure keeps boxing from being back.

Nope. The sport as it was known is dead.

Lets face it. The average fan with any kind of computer knowledge is going to find a way to stream it/pirate it instead of paying $100 for it.
Damn. Has anyone notified HBO/Showtime that only the handful of hardcore boxing fans left will buy the fight? They should probably know this information.
Those business analysts with their suits and ties and fancy degrees predicting record-breaking PPV buys sure are going to have egg on their faces when this one's over with.

the sport can be found on:
HBO
Showtime
FOX Sports 1
NBC
CBS
ABC
ESPN
NBC Sports Network
CBS Sports Network
TruTV
UniMas
But yeah it's "dead" like people have been saying for a decade now.

quote:How do you figure that? All they've done is dominate the best welterweights and junior middleweights in the world, which they've been doing for years. Except for Pacquiao getting caught 3 years ago by a last-second shot in a fight he was otherwise dominating, against a fighter he had already beaten twice, Pacquiao and Mayweather have been the best fighters in the world. Every P4P list reflects that.
Today it's just two fighters past their prime finally meeting in the ring.
So I'm not sure where this "past their prime" thought comes from.
To answer OP's question, no.

As a casual fan at best, I agree. No way I'm gonna order this on PPV. I'm either gonna stream it, or not watch at all.

Boxing is back on network television.

It will be a tap on the worlds shoulder. "Hey. I'm boxing. We are over here." The world will look. But then go back to NFL and MMA. this fight should have happened one fight before Manny got KTFO'd.
And as mentioned, heavyweights must carry the sport. I can only name the Klitschkos, and one is no longer fighting. Right?

The fact that these two boring, unentertaining, 40 year olds can get paid hundreds of millions of dollars shows that boxing is not dead. Young kids see this and will take up boxing. Parents see this and will force their children into boxing. I just don't understand where the hype and money is coming from for this fight.

Your average fan cares way more about a boxing match than an MMA fight. WIth boxing, you're guaranteed to see punches thrown. With MMA, you have a great chance of seeing two dudes in tight shorts lay on each other for 20 minutes. Also, boxing knows how to market their stars. UFC is all about the brand now and that's why their popularity is slowly declining. The stars retired and now it's a brand with a bunch of whoevers. And boxing promoters, despite their reputation, actually take better care of their fighters than that piece of sh!t Dana White.
Oh yeah, and boxing PPVs consistently draw more numbers than UFC. Boxing is where it's at and always will be.

I don't know how anyone that has seen Pacquiao box could call his style boring but ok.

I think it might be detrimental to boxing. people that havent watched boxing but are intrigued by the fight will pay $100 to watch a boring fight thats more than likely going to come down to a decision.

Like when GSP used to lay on people for 25 minutes to win a safe decision? Seems like every time I try to give MMA a chance again all I see is people taking naps on the canvas.
