The OT was always funny on this before the tech board materialized. People usually get called out on here for being cheap, yet it seemed like most of the people bragging about cutting the cord were jumping through all kinds of hoops and borrowing passwords to save like $50 a month.
I cut the cord for 2 years. I don't watch much TV outside of sports, and what I do watch are just series, so I can watch those any kind of way, mainly on Kodi.

But yea, to get my sports fix, it was jumping through hoops on Kodi, or with an antenna I had to hope was working that day. And with Kodi, streams aren't remotely reliable compared to cable. The vast majority were low quality, with very very few being HD quality, and not much reliability in terms of buffering and losing streams.

So I went back to Direct TV. There's very little doubt that the TV landscape in 10 or so years will be nothing like what we have now, it'll likely move to paying rates for specific channels or packages of channels, such as all of the ESPNs. But until then, I don't mind spending $75/month for cable and easily getting my sports fix taken care of.

I think its more your internet. I have webpass which is like 400 up 400 down internet for $600/year and I stream 1080p in super high quality with no lag. ATT and Comcast are nazis in terms of what type of internet they give you and how much data you can stream. Google Fiber actually just bought webpass a couple weeks ago so hopefully it will roll out into more than just 5 cities.

Is it directly related to ESPN or more a matter of the cord-cutting trend?

Cord cutting.

ESPN is on pretty much every single basic cable package there is.

If you cut cable/satellite, you cut ESPN.

The only reason I have ESPN is for LSU sports. If ESPN didn't broadcast LSU sports I would cancel with a quickness too.

This. Just switch over to the Fox Sports channels. You will be happy. And won't have to wonder if you are watching CNN or ESPN as they read sports star's twitter feeds about the latest headline news.

Im sure you would be pissed off too if your school had a CCG stolen from them the way the Huskers did in 2009. Texas is why the Big 12 is gonna fold and to be honest they get what they deserve, they let those frickers in Austin have too much power and the ruined it.

Does KODI have actual ESPN channels or are you just streaming pirated feeds?

$10/month for a package of ESPN channels purchased online

without being subsidized I think ESPN costs anywhere between $20-30. I doubt many cord cutters are on board for that

I don't understand the "ESPN loses Subscribers".
No one can subscribe to ESPN. So 453k cable subscribers either ditched cable or lowered their package to basic cable.
Are they factoring in Sling and Vue in their subscribers?

I have a hard time believing only 6% of consumers would pay to have ESPN. I think some of these people don't realize they likely wouldn't be watching their college football teams, SEC/B1G/ACC/PAC

quote:

During Disney's first-quarter earnings call CEO Bob Iger told investors that the majority of losses aren't coming from cord-cutters, but from cord-shavers. The skinny bundles offered by most pay-TV providers don't include ESPN since it's one of the biggest factors causing cable prices to increase. During the second-quarter call, he gave analysts an update. He noted that over-the-top (OTT) pay-TV services like Sling TV and PlayStation Vue "did contribute incremental subs for ESPN this last quarter." He also mentioned that Disney has been in talks with both current and completely new distributors for its inclusion in less expensive network bundles. "All have expressed an avid interest in having ESPN and our other channels included in their initial offerings," Iger said. "And we are very, very encouraged by the discussions/negotiations that we are having."

I don't understand why they don't just offer a fee for the WatchESPN app to non cable subscribers, or offer packages for college football.
I'm sure a good bit of cord cutters would pay $10-$15/month for 4 months out of the year to watch college football.

If it wasn't for college football (Longhorn Network, College Gameday, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, etc.) I would cancel immediately.

isn't this for the vast majority of people?

We don't know, a cord cutter could still get HBO Go.

Eh.. HBO Now, actually. Just correcting you for reference. HBO Go requires cable credentials.

I don't think your content providers will be too happy with you cutting deals for the guys hurting their bottom line

eta: at the $10-15 price*

How exactly does your firestick get ESPN games without using someone else's provider password?

That's where Vue comes in. DVR Functionality and actually a dedicated Guide. $30 a month, a multiple streams at a time.

People broadcast events on sports add-ons. It's not the greatest quality. I couldn't handle it, tbh. I have PS Vue and the quality is top notch!

A la carte TV packages are coming soon from all the major providers.

They have to adapt. The world is tired of paying to have 80 channels they literally never watch or use.

Yeah and I'm sure your level of butthurt has nothing to do with the fact that Nebraska was one of if not the best program in CFB at the start of the Big 12 and y'all limped out of the conference as a mediocre program with a 1-9 record vs Texas during your stint in the Big 12.
