Isn't that what we've been trying to do?

No.

Look...I'm actually a USL alumnus, so I do have some small stake in this argument. But the university has had a BAD look about this, and this misconception is one of them. While they say that they use University of Louisiana at Lafayette as the official name of the university, what you see here in this sign outside Blackham is their grand frick YOU to that in reality. Oh...Lafayette is on there, it's just in tiny thin black lettering so as not to be easily read. It's the equivalent of the really sped of legaleze at the end of some car commercial on the radio that no one can fricking hear but is there to fulfill some legal bs. This official logo is damn near everywhere.

I won't even go into the trashy look outside the gates to campus on Johnston St where students kicked off the Lafayette letters underneath the LOUISIANA on the curbs YEARS ago leaving nothing but holes where the letters were. University's response? Leave it like that!

Lastly, when was the last time you heard or saw a member of the local media call UL Lafayette that instead of UL? I'm not talking sports teams, I mean the university? Almost never happens... As someone that knows a bunch of local media people due to my work, I've been told on many occasions it's because they have been pressured into calling them that.

My point is, no...in reality my alma mater has no real intention of going by both names and it continually thumbs it's nose at whatever agreement they made to do so. I will always have graduated from The University of Southwestern Louisiana and will be proud of having done so...but this bitching about the name was embarrassing when it started and it's become even more boring as they've continued to try and massage the agreement. The result is the type of bullshite confusion and faux confusion you get out of ESPN.

While LSU can be seem as having been petty about this within the state, outside of it the only ones that look bad are the guys who can't seem to figure out what their name is...and for a school that's sole purpose for having done this was image, that doesn't seem like the best continued course of action.

Lots of pent up anger in that post. I'm a ULL alumnus and I don't give a shite if someone calls it ULL, UL, USL or whatever. It's really weird that people get so riled up one way or the other.

It's funny to watch people think they're bringing an insult by calling the school USL/SLI and it's equally funny to see people that get mad in reaction to statements like that.

Nah...not about the actual topic regarding the name. Like you, I really don't care what they use and never have. However, the constant bullshite shell game that the school and it's fans have played since doing so is tiresome at least, and it's even more so if you live in the Lafayette area as I do.

I guess my take on this has always been based on the conversation I had a few days after the name change went through in 99 or whenever it was. I was standing in Joey Durel's office back when he ran his pet store on Johnston St long before he was mayor-president and he was as excited as a school girl about the name thing and I didn't care. He got pissy with me about it and I just asked what the big deal was. He ranted on and on about how it was all about image and the perception and about how that would make the difference. I just kind of laughed and suggested that maybe if students and alumni actually cared about the sports programs (what he was largely talking about at the time) things might change, but simply changing the name in an attempt to re-brand without really changing anything was pointless. So for me, I've always seen the name change through that lens...that it was done solely to re-brand without making substantive changes.

Gotcha. I understand. I live in town too and guess I've just become numb to hearing about the name stuff as it doesn't really bother me.

Lot of truth to that. At the time the name change was made at least.

I'm an LSU alum that grew up in Lafayette and has had somewhat of a schizo relationship with the Cajuns over the years. I've pulled hard for the Cajuns at times and loved Brian Mitchell and Delhomme. When 'some' (not all) of my Cajuns friends constantly bash LSU, it creates the schizo effect.

When I'm in Lafayette, I usually say 'UL' to not offend anyone as it seems to be preferred. When I'm out of state, I typically say 'ULL' or University of Louisiana-Lafayette (and sometimes have to explain the name change).

The fact that there is a Lafayette College, University of Louisville (i.e. UL with similar colors), and ESPN trolling the Cajuns makes it even more confusing to the rest of the country. I grew up with 'USL' and wish they would have just kept it. Memories of the Cajun Chicken at the basketball games hitting his drum with 'U.S.L.' just seemed right. Everything after the name change has created negative energy from all sides.

I have a buddy who lived here in New Orleans in the 1980s, he's from Kinder, smart guy, very successful in ANYTHING he tries. But in the middle 1980s when we were undergrads. he was on the University of Louisiana bandwagon.

They thought that because Louisiana didn't have a UL, and that University of ________________ is usually the more prestigious land-grant university in every OTHER state, changing the name would make THEM the top dog in reputation like everywhere else.

Problem is, ol' Huey P. set everything up the way it is, and things are entrenched, now.

What's even more funny is when a stupid arse radio host from Syracuse, who has no ties to ULL, gets bent when the school is called ULL.

I agree. It has been a slow process to undo the neglect under Authemont's reign , but the school is trying to make the improvements needed to advance the sports programs. Forcing Farmer out recently was a step in the right direction.

I swear I've read this same exact Durel in his pet shop story on this board several times, in different threads.

You must be very proud that there was this one time that you had a conversation with the future Lafayette Parish President. Maybe some day, someone will give you a gold star for it.

Ah, the "Ryan Street High" wise crack. You'd think you "Ragin Cajuns" could come up with something original for once. Then again, you can't even remember your real name, so how can anyone expect anything else of you?

And if you think we get bent out of shape about it, then you missed the point. It's the easiest way to get under the skin of those Cajun fans. It's hillarious! It's as if they think they are being belittled by being called their real name.

That doesn't mean much when you're a doormat in your own conference.

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern are already proving to be better members of the Sun Belt in Football.
