Correct, but this thread was started about a baseball coach, so that's why I keep using that sport as an example. So far I think we've agreed on the problem being the mindset and not so much what the activity is.

I'd be embarrassing the shite out of the kids if I moaned about pt.
I am very familiar with Ascension Parish HS sports. Baseball/softball parents are on a different when it comes to parental interferrence. For any number of reasons from the socioeconomics of those parents to travel ball.

Had a conversation about this very thing (well sort of) this morning at the office...
I played ball in college for a few years and had to quit due to injury so I have somewhat of a background to go on...
The thing I see is that many of these travel teams and other types of leagues are coached by parents not someone who necessarily has the skills to teach fundamentals to the kids. Many times the only reason they are coaching is b/c of their kid. Always makes for a bad situation waiting to happen...
Other thing is they all think their kid is god's gift to baseball b/c at the age of 10 or so he is better than everybody else. Well kids develop at different ages and some have better motor skills at that level. Some of those "better" kids go on to be great players... others level out at the high school level where they are passed up by kids who are "late bloomers" so to speak.
This is a huge area of contention. This happened when I was younger as well, just wasn't as big of a deal i guress... always had that big kid in the youth leagues that threw harder and hit it further... only to see him in high school and he would be damn near the same size and throwing the same speed. Only difference is the bases are further and so is the mound, damn near always ended being a whiny bitch b/c he got his titties ripped or struck out.
I don't have a kid, but i'm pretty sure he will not be playing baseball damn near year round... just look at the majors and see whats happening. The kids a being beat the frick up... the arms are going to fall apart. Throwing a baseball is not natural... therefore if you do it too much you will ruin your shoulder and or elbow. I also have a background working in orthopedics... it happens a lot.
People need to go back to letting little johnny play baseball, football and baseketball and or soccer.... change sports with the seasons, let him develop skills that will make him a better athlete at the next levels and quit paying so much damn money on a 10yr old to get taught how to hit.
Hit on a fricking tee for gods sake! It will solve many many problems.

whatever happened to the days when coaches told kids and parents they were not good enough to make the team?
Back in 1983, I tried out for JV baseball at Tara. I didn't make the team and I moved on. I realized that I did not know the game as well as other students/players bc some of the other players had experience playing the game. I was a little disappointed in not making the team but my parents kept encouraging me to pursue my goal of being a meteorologist. And I did 7 years later.
Kids have to be taught, you don't get everything you want in life. I seriously doubt any of those players on that JV team ever played D1 ball. But it is just a game and it can be fun when parents realize little Johnny is not going to be the next Derek Jeter.

My son lost his oldest half-bro last year. He was a good athlete, just fell into the "street life". I've made the same mistake. I did a lot of dumb stuff as a kid. He's not with us any more, and in the last six months I've really come to view private sports as a potential way to keep "at risk" kids focused.
I have a big beef with people punishing kids for playing non school sports. I also have a tendency to over-react and rush to judgement.
I hope to be part of the solution, not the problem.

Ed the real problem w outside sports is some flirt with eligibility issues...lhsaa will not allow players to play on same sport team during the HS season..
Some club/elite/travel orgs try to coerce HS kids into playing duri season
Also. From. The former ea coaches standpoint by summer ball he may mean post HS level Tavel / showcase as well
From a baseball perspective too much pitching and throwing is bad period

That's no good. I was unaware of eligibility conflicts. That's definitely toxic.
Toups coached me 15 or so years ago and had the absolute nerve to bench me in a favor of a guy who turned out to be a two time NCAA all American (football)

Grew up playing ball with Mike and graduated a year behind him from Woodlawn in '88. Coach Almond was Mike's HS basketball coach....Almond came to WHS in '86. Glad to see Mike has done extremely well as a HS coach and wish him the best. His dad had the State Farm agency for years...good family.

Ed sometimes the eligibility rules suck ,,,
The colleges apcan easily find the kid if coaches don't facilitate communication
But if. Coach a and b say he is a turd.....they flush the toilet

True. Very true. Coaches talk, word spreads, things happen.
Sorry for the
Eta: I'm glad ascension has/had such great coaches.
