It's the truth. Bonds was a bastard, and that's why the media had it out for him and no one would lift a finger to help him.

They aren't going to dig too hard to try to sink Ortiz.

1) Good, but not great, career numbers. Ortiz does not yet have 500 HR (a benchmark number for many voters) and has "only" 1429 RBIs. This puts him at 65th all time. Many people ahead of him on this list are not in the HOF currently.

He's averaging about 30 HR and 100 RBI per season over the past 5 when playing a full season. He'll probably retire with 500/1700. 5 Top-5 MVP finishes, 9 (and counting) All Star appearances and 3 rings and the media loves him. He's a shoo in.

murray didnt really DH in his prime

And he won 3 Gold Gloves early in his career too.

He absolutely should make it in my opinion. He had a great career, which isn't over, and has been a beast in the postseason for one of the greatest franchises in MLB.

not until edgar gets in, at least. edgar was a good bit better

also...

.289/.381/.560
.295/.409/.553

one of those is ortiz's career regular season line if the years his team made the playoffs, and the other is his career playoff line. pretty damn similar

This is a tough one. He's had so many HoF moments, and quite literally carried the Red Sox to a World Series this year. That being said, he doesn't have out of this world career numbers, and he never played the field.

It's a unique situation, and I could see him getting in and NOT getting in and I don't know if people could be upset either way.

He doesn't have that stigma attached to him like the others, at least it seems that way.

309 HR and 1,261 RBI's pale in comparison to what Ortiz will finish his career with. He also only finished with 2,247 career hits. He was a solid player but no way he gets into the HOF with those stats. Not nearly enough power production from a middle of the order hitter.

If Barry Bonds can't get in and he never failed a test (though he clearly used), then David Ortiz should definitely not get in. That is, if we want any semblance of uniformity around HOF voting in the steroid era.

.312/.418/.515 for edgar
.287/.381/.549 for papi

edgar started 532 games at 3rd, 28 at 1st
papi has starter 250 games at 1st

and it's not like edgar didn't have his fair share of 'clutch' moments. most notably the 1995 nlds.

and just for shits and gigs...
65.6 war for edgar
40.8 war for papi

Because he never tested positive, never acknowledged using PED's and he has still been productive in the current era with constant testing. IMO

Yeah but the BBWA is all about "milestone" numbers. 400 HR...., 1,500 RBI....,3,000 hits,....250 wins.....
