If so, how should it be structured? Unlimited funds, or some limits set?

What about autograph sessions, appearances, etc?

For me, Id be against straight paying players a salary, but if a kid can get someone to pay him for his autograph or to show up at a luncheon I say go for it.

They do get paid. They get free education / free living / free food / free clothes / free ipads / free training from some of the best trainers in the world / free access to state of the art facilities.

At some schools the cost of all that can be worth more than 100k per year.

If you pay them, make them pay their own tuition. Give the athletic scholarships to some deserving high school kids that will actually put it to good use and graduate.

I prefer the current "pay under the table" system.

The universities already give them free everything. I had the academic equivalent and it was quite easy for me to make it without even having a job except for the summers.

That being said, I see no issue in letting someone make some cash signing autographs, making appearances, or doing local commercials. I'd even let players sign endorsements in college. Amateurism has been dead for years, might as well let the kids make money on the free market like everyone else.

I'm against a salary because then you could open it up to revenue draining sports like Men's Swimming and Women's anything.

Rather make it more of a free market meritocracy. Players can be paid by outside sources for appearances, using their likeliness, autographs, whatever.

I'm sort of in the grey zone on paying players a salary. But, I do believe that players should make money off of their likeness.

Yes, they should at least get royalties.

I think you can pay the players a salary, but make it be managed by someone else, so they can't go blow it all the first month of the semester. Maybe give them ___ a month to spend on whatever

oh wait, THAT'S WHAT THEY ALREADY DO. I know as a scholarship guy at OSU (non-revenue sport), my friend was given like $1000 a month in 2003 (I'd assume it's more today). I don't know if that is enough, so you could maybe just make that number like 1250 or 1500

Where it gets dicey is differentiating $1,000 gift for signing some balls at a booster's party, and the shady gambler offering $500 for injury information or a couple thousands to miss a few key layups. Policing that could get real sticky, real fast.

Yes.

Endorsements, no limits. That way, not every kid gets paid and the burden isn't on the school to pay them.

It would be a more true sense of the free market system. If Manziel wants to write his name down and make $7500, cool. If he wants to endorse Nike, cool. If the 4th string defensive tackle for Eastern Michigan can't get an endorsement, cool, he'll still enjoy his free tuition.

Absolutely not. Some people who argue in favor of it don't recognize the value of a free college degree.

I'm against a "salary", but I wouldn't have an issue with making $$$ off of their likeness (I've changed my tune on that recently).

How on Earth is it fair to not pay every athlete? A&M's third string defensive tackle works just as a hard in practice as Johnny Manziel. You would really tell him "sorry, you're not a star, so you don't get paid"? Keep that in the pros.
