At the time, we were naive.

McGwire had always hit homeruns and seemed like a Paul Bunyon...(he was a Bash Bro...he had a history of awesomness, nobody questioned them. )

People seemed to only question someone who comes out of nowhere...is suddenly huge the next year.

Hojo...got questioned.

In the early 90's.

Sosa was murmured about:

But damn, McGwire kept getting bigger and bigger and nobody really said anything.

I knew he was on something but hoped it was just the jars of creatine and such in his locker.. When it comes right down to it though....I didn't care, that summer of baseball was fun again with the home run race and the long balls all over the league.. the crash was inevitable but the ride was glorious..

He has really big upper leg here. Probably using at this point '90

Jose can believe to get a pass, he exploded in the crazy 80's where all our action movie stars were huge...football players were huge...it was American gladiators.

People thought, this is normal.

I mean this is 1988...and nobody said boo. If Sly and Arnold can be huge, and so many NFL players...why not baseball?

Before Jose, the everyday baseball player looked like Paul Molitor.

Dude was always big. Keep in mind he was 6'5"

Not to mention he grew up in CA and went to college in USC. He seemingly could've been on something in college

McGwire was my idol, as I was 8 as well in 98. Had the red/white Oakley shades, the McGwire 1st base mitt, wore number 25... I didn't care. That was a fun summer .

McGwire went to USC so there's a good chance he was using in college. I used creatine in high school and never cracked 170 at 6ft.

The deal is...people still thought of steroids as:

NFL players
Weight lifters
Body builders
Olympians in different sports

There was even this common refrain...a baseball player would never use PEDs because it would hurt his skill and restrict his swing.

PED was viewed as only for sports where you just need strength. Baseball was skill...you don't need muscle, a sense of feeling awesomely strong, young man testosterone or quick recovery.

I was 7 and thought he and Sammy Sosa were gods. Most fun baseball ever was to me, I guess it helps that I was a kid. Had no clue they were using steroids and I don't really care now. It was awesome.

Steroids doesn't make a skinny kid look like what McGuire turned into. He was always a fairly big muscular guy. Every nfl running back has tree trunk thighs. Doeant mean they are all juicing.

McGwire used.

But yeah...he was always big. And when you are tall and big young...you burn off fat so easily.

You will just get bigger as you get older.

But that's the problem in the 80's, we reduced PEDs to just getting big.

There's so much more on how PEDs help you in physical endeavors.

It never occurred to me to be suspicious (I was in my twenties) until one day when McGwire and Sosa were around the 50 HR mark and my dad said to me "I'd bet my life they're on steroids because hitting 40 used to be a great year."

There have been about 250 seasons in which a player has hit OVER 40 homeruns in the 120 year baseball history.

157 came after the 1990.

You sure you're watching the same sport?

You forgot to check your paper before turning it in.

You could say the same thing about 5000 yard passers in the NFL and 3 point shooting in the nba. Philosophies change, records get broken.
