Because any coach worth a damn wants to compete at the highest level and win a national championship.

Says who? I'd take his gig any day of the week. Some coaches (insert just about any job here) get comfortable in their surroundings and don't want to leave. Some prefer being at smaller schools. Some don't want the hassle of being under pressure to win a national championship. There are many reasons to coach at a smaller school.

You're right, there are many reasons to coach at a smaller school. I would imagine the number one reason would be: to get a job at a bigger school.

Hudspeth may love Lafayette, the fine people, great food and all those gorgeous Cajun ladies with their flahhht ahccents. But he'd be out of there like a fart in the wind if a school like Ole Miss or Mississippi State came calling, let's be real here.

Did anyone else want him?

Tulane is the reason he is making $1M/ year. They offered him the job before hiring johnson and made the cajuns match to stay.

He also interviewed with Ole Miss (not offered) when Hugh Freeze got hired and USM (offered)

At this point with the way the last couple of years are going, he will probably be around a little longer IMO.

Yup. It'd be quite an accomplishment to stay long term at a school like ULL and turn it into a winner like a Baylor (just one example). You just rarely see that kind of loyalty in college sports anymore. Plus I've heard he likes the co-eds, and that'll bite you in the arse as well.

His (current) wife was actually a co-ed at North Alabama when he was the coach there....

My Lafayette friends seem to believe the trend has continued....facing facts, most young coaches face the temptation at one stop or the next. Or all of em.

No...its very hard to come by. That's why Les is a genius, not a mad-hatter.

Gotta get over the 10 win hump and beat a p5 school imo. He's still a young coach but no program growth since year 1

He seems arrogant to me, but don't underestimate what he did in Lafayette. There were no "10 win humps" before he arrived.
