You and I both know that it's not realistic to expect the Astros to go out and pay top dollar for more than one player, whether we like it or not. Edwin and Jon Jay is a reasonable haul, 2 guys commanding multi year, $15MM+ contracts is not.

And that is the problem. You act like it's your own money. They keep jacking up prices they better commit to winning or they will have half empty stadium again.

Castro needs to go but I don't want to buy high on Wilson Ramos.
Catchers just aren't all that important for spending big money unless they are the rare stud. I'd go with Heineman/Gattis next year. At least the former is a good contact hitter who plays very well defensively in all areas.

Maybe by 2018 Jake Rogers can be a useful Catcher at the MLB level

They just spent $47.5MM on Yuli. Baseball reference projects our 2017 payroll of guarantees+options+arbitration+minimums to be $65.6MM. They haven't put Yuli into our payroll yet, so add his $14MM and we're up to just shy of $80MM.
Our opening day payroll this year was $105.7MM, a 13% increase from $93.5MM in 2015. Let's assume they are willing to start at $120MM next year, another 13.5% increase. That's $40MM in offseason acquisitions. If we spend that much money this offseason I would be really encouraged.

Yeah, he's a stud defensively, but Garrett Stubbs will be ready much sooner. He'd thrown out over 50% on the bases.

Where is Stubbs at right now?

It should be expected, and fans should be furious if they don't. Attendance and TV ratings are up, so that means more revenue. You spend money to make money, and they will not keep upping profits if they don't spend to win now.

Encarnacion has to be a priority

I completely agree, I expect a payroll increase as well. I'm just trying to point out that I think the strategy will be go after one big name and then make use the rest for support pieces.

Oh I've been tooting that horn, too. I'm the Jay/Big Bat combo champion because Teoscar and maybe even Jake need their chances, too. But if they don't waste their money on Jason 'Metrics Lie' Castro, they could spend bigger.
For example, Giles is good but what if Gurriel can convince Chapman to sign here? Jay/Encarnacion/Chapman would be a beastly offseason.
And if we're going Cubastros, maybe Cespedes (3 years younger) if not Encarnacion. And then there's Beltran for DH/LF. Gotta come up with one of those guys to bat 4th or 5th in 2017.

So Buxton got sent back to the minors for the 4th time now.
I'll just go ahead and thank Luhnow again for not drafting that guy. What a disaster for the Twins.

Buxton might just be Jake Marisnick, which is a disaster for a Top 2 overall pick.

Buxton is still only 22, he debuted at 21. For reference, a guy like Springer didn't play his first MLB game until 24.
The twins made the mistake of rushing him, but the book is far from written on him. The guy needs to refine his approach at the plate. His defense and speed are already above average MLB tools. He's not far off

I could get down with a big bat/support bat/closer offseason. Rumor has it Chapman liked NY and might go back. I think we have enough relief pitching so getting anything less than an elite closer seems like a waste of money.

I didn't say that, and agree he's still young. But his struggles are a bit concerning.
Just glad that Luhnow went with the "cheap" guy in Correa

Yeah, I basically only taking Chapman. Other than that, a legit lefty reliever free agent. Replace the money they're spending on Neshek with someone like Logan.
Posted on 8/8/16 at 12:31 pm to Jwho77
Neskek's option was included in my $80MM so if you subtract him that's an extra $6MM to spend
