Just scanned the LHSAA qualifying rounds, only saw one male sub 49. Pretty sure he's being recruited

Not anymore, but I'm sure I could back in high school. I never timed a quarter mile, but I ran timed 5-minute miles.

Yep, if you run a legit 49s open 400 you would get a ton of college offers. I have a little experience with this, a well known college/national team track coach told me this once, he would look at two different 18 year old quarter milers.

Runner A: 47 flat track phenom who has been running national age level times since elementary school and has great coaching

or

Runner B: The 49-50 second guy who played 2 other sports in high school and never ran club track or worked out year round for track.

He said its literally 50/50 who will turn out to be the better runner at 22, sometimes the phenom guys and girls plateau really young.

You do realize that you would not keep that pace for a full mile right? This is not an argument for this.

I think an interesting statistic is only roughly 30% of American olympic medalists have medaled @ junior Olympic competitions.

Some of them never competed, but what I take from that is that the majority of junior champs are beneficiaries of early maturation.

Yes, easily. Any full grown male should be able to do that.
Any full grown OT'er can do it I'm sure. The average person absolutely cannot do this.

edit: for comparison - the world record is 43.18 seconds by Michael Johnson.

I think running a sub 60sec 400m for a 10 year old is VERY hard. I think Ochocinco is full of shite, as are lots of people in this thread. Here are results from track meets of HS girls and boys THIS year,

I'd say you'd have to be actively training/competing. No way you just go out and run a sub 60s 400m just out of nowhere.

Small colleges may want you. More successful D1 schools may want you to either walk on or have a small (SMALL) scholarship. But running a 49 will not fill your mailbox with D1 scholarship offers. Let alone full scholarships. That doesn't diminish the time at all, to be clear. But 49 is fairly elite in high school, but rather pedestrian at the D1 college leve.

The Indoor 4 is actually easier than the open 4 as you get banked turns to help you.

Yep, especially in sports like many track and field events where at lower levels and ages someone can dominate just off physical ability and being bigger and more mature than everyone else.

Ran the 4x400 relay in high school as a secondary event. Was just under 52 seconds in high school. I'd like to think I could still run a sub minute 400m 6 years later. The fastest guys were under 50 seconds, but I'd guarantee the average Joe couldn't break a minute.

True, a legit 49 won't get you a full or even half ride at LSU, but it will get you on the team for sure, especially if you are willing to work hard and have room to improve.

Disclaimer, I wasn't able to do it, but its almost easier in college to go from a 50 second guy to get to a sub 48 than it is for a 47 to go to a sub 46. That jump to going 45.XX isn't easy for all but the elite guys.

That's very true. The difference between times isn't linear. By that, I mean that running a 49 compared to a 50 isn't nearly as impressive as running a 46 compared to a 47. Or a 48 compared to a 49 for that matter.

And yes, I agree that a 49 would get you a place on most D1 teams (if you wanted it), but I'll argue all day that not only would it not get you a full scholarship, it wouldn't get you a half scholarship or even a quarter one, depending on the school.

I agree at LSU a 49 won't get you any money, just a spot on the team, running at home meets, and a chance to improve over a few years and maybe qualify for the SEC meet.

However, I've seen guys running 49 in HS get (some) money from the SLU's, Southern, Tulane, Northwestern St., etc. of the track world.

Lsu's top 400m runner ran a 46.95 in high school, which was the best time in the entire nation for a high schooler. So I would imagine 47-48 would be the times that got you elite scholarhsip offers, with 49 getting you looks at most schools as well

Yeah I realize that mate. But with obesity rates at an alarming rate, many people would do it in 2 minutes
