Could we see the end of the Olympic games in our lifetime?

Just watched real sports
Only LA and Paris bidding on 2024 games and no cities currently showing interest for 2028 games
Cynic in me thinks that as long as a few leaders can dupe the public for personal gain, we will continue to see the clusterfrick that is the Olympic games

Naw, there is way too much money involved for it to just disappear. Sponsors won't let it happen due to location issues.

If advertisers and networks can make money on it, it will continue. Why not just go to a country with the infrastructure set up and let it rip? Oh yeah, they won't pay off the IOC.

Nah, but it'll start rotating on a short list instead of multiple bids.

Texas will make a run at the 2028 games

It won't disappear. It hopefully will be reformed to not be a crooked arse waste of billions of dollars.
The public has wised up to what a gigantic waste of money it is.
No reason at all it should cost what it costs to bid and host the games.
It should rotate through developed countries that already have the facilities to host it.

This is the correct answer. Hell, Los Angeles and New York could probably host it overtime. These countries are going fricking broke bidding - it is beyond stupid.

like most big cities the traffic would be a nightmare

I thought that was because they're waiting to see if the IOC will award both 2024 and 2028 this year? Many seem to think LA is going to be given 2028 should they not get 2024.

I think we do. But it turns into something like a yearly world championship.

I don't think that is an avoidable problem anywhere though. In NYC, though, the landmass in the city and into NJ for facilities could alleviate a lot. LA would be the best IMO. Janet Evans has been a great leader in promoting it for 2024.

I haven't watched the Olympics in 20 years and couldn't care less if it ends. The IOC is almost as corrupt as FIFA.

I don't understand why they don't just have a permanent host for the Olympics.
Bring it Athens and build structures that can be used every 4 years, and then be used for training purposes every year.
It would save an insane amount of money, make trip planning easier for the public, and the facilities could draw tourists 365 days a year as well

I'm pretty sure both Paris and L.A. have said that they have no interest in 2028, only 2024.

(Nearly) Everyone Runs Over Budget and loses money
If you break down the budget each host city had and how much was actually spent, you’d see that most ran over budget, and created a deficit rather than profit.
In 2004, Greece went 97% over budget, spending $11 billion on events. Although Greece’s economic slowdown cannot be solely attributed to this horrid fiscal mismanagement, it certainly did not help either. The 2014 Winter Sochi Olympics were the most expensive in history, costing the country $51 billion. However, the city resembles a ghost town more than it does the year-round, global resort that President Putin aimed for it to become.
The 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles were incredibly unusual, in that the city actually managed to turn a $200 million profit. The fact that it hasn’t really been replicated is a testament to the useless financial burden that the Olympics have come to represent.

pretty much ended in my book when they decided competing in a sewerage river filled with trash and garbage was perfectly ok to do for the Olympic water sports.
hell even the indoor pool with water from the drinking water supply was so polluted and filthy that it turned green because of so many chemicals had to be dumped in so it was safe and even then it had to be drained, refilled, and chemically treated twice before it was "deemed" safe, and even then they had to "decontaminate" everyone every time after coming out of the water.
besides, the media has decided there are no countries anymore and only a world view with no pride in any country over another is allowed today.

After spending a $20 BILLION on the World Cup & Olympics, Brazil's Congress is having a vote this week to freeze budget for next 20 YEARS.
