I could easily raise you Madison Bumgarner, circa 2014.

quote:in how many of those innings does trout have nearly as much impact as sale? The amount of impact that trout has on the game is minimized if he gets nothing from anyone else. He can get as many hits as he wants, can steal as many bases as he wants, but he is only directly involved in those plays in 3 or 4 innings every game and is dependent on whether or not his teammates can bring him in or get on base so he can bring them in
So sale for a max of 14 innings or Trout for a guaranteed 45. Its not a hard answer.
I don't think that pitchers should win the MVP, but not because they don't have as much impact as positional players. The amount they have on any single game is equal to the amount that other players have on the other games in between starts

Oh the Madison Bumgarner who pitched one game in game three of the 2014 NLDS and was the losing pitcher to Doug Fister? Failing to see your point. Bryce Harper impacted the 2014 NLDS more than Bumgarner

You fail to see my point that 2014 Madison Bumgarner proves how valuable a pitcher can be? Why is the argument like the divisional series is all that matters?
And again, if position players are clearly more valuable than starting pitchers, why do front offices (who have never been smarter than they are now) not spend significantly more on the top position players than pitchers?

By the way, Mike Trout hit .083/.267/.333 in the 2014 divisional series. That is small sample size noise that means nothing, but if we are going to act like Madison Bumgarner losing game 3 to Doug Fister is relevant, I'll add it.

Im not downplaying the impact of a pitcher Im just illustrating that regardless of the skill of said pitcher they are limited by the nature of the position in their impact.

Because you have to win each step to win the world series.
I would choose the player that can give me 9 innings for each of the 5 games of the divisional series 7 games of the ALCS and 7 games of the WS over a guy by the nature of the position might throw as little as 1 game in the divisional series and the team gets bounced.
If Dallas Keuchel had been able to throw more than 1 game in the 2015 ALDS then there is very likely a different 2015 World Series champion.
There is a limited number of impact starting pitchers. Hence why they still get paid however to your point. The top 10 career MLB earnings has 8 position players and only 2 pitchers one of which wasnt even a starter.
