I believe Sale should be the favorite to win the AL MVP.

Here are some important stats to back up his case:

According to Fangraphs:

#1 in Total WAR at 7.4. Next closest in all of MLB is Altuve at 6.1

2.52 ERA/1.92 FIP/ 2.62 xFIP while pitching in the AL East

W-L record which some voters will look at is 14-4

BaBip of .286 which is right around his career average of .290

His Hard Hit and Medium Hit rate are slightly higher than his career average

Baseball Reference:

5.7 WAR which is 3rd in AL behind Altuve and Simmons and has an ERA + of 181

He is one pace to have the 3rd highest strikeout rate behind 99 Pedro and 01 Randy Johnson

It should be Altuve. Sale is dominating this year, but hasn't clearly destroyed and lapped the field. Altuve is right there.

Even Kluber may still make the Cy a discussion.

Now that Judge has come back to earth, it looks to be a dog fight between Sale and Altuve. It will depend a good bit on how Houston does down the stretch. If they continue on their current level and limp into the playoffs, won't be a good look for Altuve regardless of how good he is down the stretch, as Sale has the beneficiary of a bigger market and media presence.

I hope Altuve wins it as a fan, but couldn't be that triggered about it if Sale gets it given how amazing his season has been.

I actually think Corey Kluber is more deserving. Nobody even mentions that Kluber is closing in on a historical achievement. 8 or more strike outs in 15 consecutive games. The record is 16. That's dam impressive. Kluber has pitched in 4 less games than Sale or else their numbers are nearly identical!

Boston vs Houston on a media writers vote isn't a fight Houston wins unfortunately.

Sad, because that should carry no weight at all.

Exactly. Kluber is absolutely on fire. As is the case with Cleveland, he will be under the radar compared to Sale. Can't go wrong with either one right now.

As for Altuve...Houston is limping because of injuries. They've had a MASH unit lately.

He has had an amazing season but availability is very important when it comes to awards. Kluber has thrown 30 less innings than Sale so far.

For example last year Kershaw was by far the best pitcher in MLB but since he missed so much time, the NL CY Young went to Scherzer. Barring a serious collapse by Sale it will be nearly impossible for Kluber to catch up to Sale

Yeah, but I think for MVP writers will be more inclined to vote for the guy who plays 5x as many games over the course of the season.

We've seen pitchers win, but it doesn't happen too often.

I'd have Sale first right now. I think the writers would more likely go to Altuve though.

Kluber has been great, but Sale has a lower ERA and FIP and has pitched 30 more innings. There really isn't an argument for Kluber over Sale.

So you think because Kluber has performed at a similar level for less innings he should get it?

I'm not sure the precedence, but are we entirely sure that Trout won't be in the discussion at the end of the season? Barring another injury he should finish with at least 115 games played. His season, albeit abbreviated, has been amazing. He's 3rd in the MLB in WAR(for hitters) with 5.3, even with missing time. There's a good chance he might be #1 at season's end.

Plays in 20% of his teams games. Enjoy the cy young, MVP is not for pitchers. Why do we have to say this every year

Mookie betts , on his own team, is more valuable

I feel like Trout's MVP case will be like Kershaw's Cy chances last year. Historically great performance, by far the best per game played, but too much time missed for the voters to give them the award.

kershaw missed too much time last year, trout will still easily qualify for the batting title and general leaderboard stuff as long as he doesnt get hurt again

i think trout is a pretty safe bet for the MVP at the end of the year. especially with the angels making a wild card push right now

A pitcher has way more impact on that one game than a position player though. Sale has faced 654 hitters this year. Betts has only batted 525 times. Now he impacts the game by playing the field too, but the idea that a pitcher doesn't have the overall impact of a position player and can't win MVP isn't accurate.

If the Angels get a WC or come really close, which is looking good, I think Trout is a lock honestly. Aside from all the individual stats, they're 40-34 with him and 21-24 without him and the old school writers that vote will love that

He is barely projected to qualify. I don't know though, you might be right. It's starting to look like he does end up leading the AL in WAR for a 6th straight year (at least among position players, not sure he catches Sale). I'm just not sure the voters give it to him with that much missed time, especially if the Angels don't make the playoffs.
