DC's local news says that it's a broken femur and tibia. Usually leg bones are six week recoveries but since it required surgery it could much longer.

Thank God he is still alive and prayers to the family of the girl. LINK

If that's all he picked up from the crash, he should be pretty thankful. There's probably still a chance that he could play in the 2010 World Cup.

What was Davies doing out at 3AM when they have a game tomorrow? Don't they have curfews?

I'm not a medical person so this is pure ignorance. If all he suffered were broken bones in his leg, why is ESPN reporting him in "serious condition?" I honestly don't know what constitutes "serious," but maybe someone can shed some light on that.

Davies is in serious but stable condition. This is relatively good news. Jason Williams and Bobby Hurley were both in critical condition at this point following their accidents.

Here is a basic rundown LINK

Basically the conditions refer to vital signs rather than the injuries suffered.

This is much worse than just a broken femur. All per Grant Wahl's twitter.

quote:

USSF on Charlie Davies: fractures to right tibia/femur, left elbow, facial fractures. Lacerated bladder.

Davies hospitalized at least 1 week. Added surgery will be required for left elbow, possibly facial fractures.

USSF: Titanium rods inserted in Charlie Davies' right femur/tibia.

I don't know about him playing in the World Cup now, which is a shame, but at least he is still alive.

The one week hospitalization seems like a very low guess. I spent three weeks in the hospital with similar injuries but no internal damage and no screws or rods placed in me. However, if I was a pro soccer player, I bet I could have gotten onto the field within 4 months of my injury.

The elbow, facial fractures, and bladder won't cause him any problems by the time the leg is healed up, I'm almost positive. I do wonder how long it will take him to get over the femur/tibia injuries. That will determine whether he plays for Sochaux in the second half of the season and whether he gets to the World Cup.

I like your optimism Keys but it looks much worse. US Soccer Press Release

quote:

“Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation,” said U.S. Soccer physician Dr. Dan Kalbac, who is with the team in D.C. and collaborated with the treating doctors. ”Due to Charlie’s fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved.”

Damn, with the femur fracture, he may never play at pre-injury level ever again.

I guarantee tomorrow they will kick some Tico arse. I figured that they might lose this game with the Costa Rican fighting for their lives. If anyone wants to take my bet I'll give up avatar pic rights and a two week ban if we don't win.

I just read a quick release on the AP wire that confirms the injuries, but states the typical recovery time as 6-12 months, according to USSF team doctor. Can't link or quote for copyright reasons.

Thenry, I was just saying that Davies will probably be in the hospital for more than a week. I was in for three weeks, and I didn't have any additional surgeries or internal damage. I don't know how they would release Davies so fast considering the potential complications.

As for the recovery period, 6-12 months is so broad, but I am skeptical that it will take that long because doctors have to be cautious in their official statements. My first doctor said that I wouldn't be able to walk for 3-6 months and would have to take up to a year to be above 90%. I was walking within 2 months and running within 4. This was around the same time that Kevin Everrett was told that he would be paralyzed from the waist down, and I saw him at the EPSYs walk with a mild limp just a year after his injury.

If he's on the short end of that timetable, he may be even be able to play in the World Cup. If not, oh well. Maybe he can take a lesson out of this, play for Sochaux in 2010-11 and help the US out in Brazil for the 2014 Cup. Regardless, I won't write him off for South Africa yet. And if Eduardo made a 95% recovery from a more serious injury, I think Davies can do the same.
