Bama didn't pull a win out of their arse on a miracle play like TCU and Michigan State did

So had they just lost instead, they'd be ranked higher?

Bama's wins - Wisconsin, Mid Ten St, UL Monroe, Georgia, Arkansas, #19 A&M, Tennesee
Bama's loss - Home to #18 Ole Miss

Florida's wins - New Mex St, ECU, Kentucky, Tennessee, #18 Ole Miss, Mizzou, Georgia
Florida's loss - Road at #2 LSU

So what about Bama's resume is more appealing than Florida?

Hopefully LSU puts down an epic beat down on Bama.

On the one hand, I believe that given the way the committee rated conference titles last year, this poll is irrelevant: the final four will be the four best conference champions (or three plus Notre Dame). Period.

On the other, these ratings are insane. Look, I'll take the committee at its word and say that it values Quality Wins above all else, as defined by wins over teams above 500. Then we look at common opponents, quality of loss, and "game control".

Using this criteria, 3 of the 5 conferences have flat out wrong results. Bama is way ahead of Florida despite similar Quality wins (3-2 Bama), but Florida has the edge on common opponents (2-0 v 1-1) and a far better loss (better team and on the road). But that's not even the worst result...

Big Ten Quality Wins:
Ohio St: 3 (Penn St, WMU, UNI... yes, two MAC teams)
Iowa: 3 (Wisconsin, N'western, Pitt)
Sparty: 5 (Michigan, Oregon, Air Force, WMU, CMU)

Sparty has the most QW but Iowa's Wins are clearly BETTER. I'd rank them, on resume, Iowa, Sparty, then tOSU. Remember, these rankings aren't speculative. If we're looking at actual accomplishments so far, Iowa is a hair's breath ahead of Sparty with OSU lagging behind.

Big 12 Quality Wins:
TCU: 1 (Tex Tech)
Baylor: 1 (Tex Tech)
Okie St: 2 (Tex Tech, CMU)
Oklahoma: 1 (Tech)

So why is Okie St down with OU and not up with Baylor and TCU?

Things will sort themselves out, but right now, its clear the committee values Brand Name more than anything.

I agree, for everything that the committee did that made sense, there are 2 things that don't make sense

Yes. First, that response showed you didn't really read my post, but whatever. LSU and Clemson's resume's are so good right now, they are virtually lapping the field. Tiebreakers don't even come in to play.

But also, Clemson is the second-biggest brand name in the ACC. If we start from the premise that it is going to be 4 of 5 conference champs, then yes, Clemson most certainly benefits from a brand name bump over all of its competitors save FSU, who has a loss. They get an additional brand name bump by beating Notre Dame, the ultimate brand name in college football.

I believe the committee has basically started an elimination bracket with this first ranking.

You got all the teams playing each other and the winners move on losers, while not quite out, need help. They have done a good job and I have no issue with any of the rankings. If you truly look at what is going on in the rankings, they are giving teams chances to move around.

2011 answered that question for you.

So, basically, nothing has changed.

I still say the BCS formula, prior to changing in 2004 when then media darling USC didn't benefit, was the fairest formula. They should have kept that formula, then MANDATED the title game consisted of two conference champions. End of story.

The SOS component was the best thing to happen to CFB in decades.

Now, we are back to the SOS (SAME OLD shite). CFBWWE. Unlevel playing fields for "pedigree" teams. LOL

What a joke.

SOS can be manipulated so many ways, it is the worst metric out there.

Trevor Matich just said on CFB Live that Alabama is ranked higher than Florida because of the quality of their loss. He said Bama's loss is to #18 and UF's is to #2. And for some reason he didn't stop himself and say "wait my is logic retarded"

It wont matter because UF is going to either get a rematch with one of the East teams and play its way in, unless it loses to FSU.

The whole ranking is, as I said earlier, a playoff bracket before the 4 team bracket.

Alabama still has LSU and UF
UF still has Winner of West and FSU
LSU has the Bama, Ole Miss, Florida
Clemson has FSU
FSU has Clemson and Duke
Notre Dame and Stanford will be a possible play-in
The B1G has two games that are play-ins

Well it does matter because it shows you how terrible the thinking is by these decisionmakers. "It'll all work out in the end" unless it doesn't and they frick up the final rankings.

This. And add the Big XII with their round-robin matchups.

I dont understand why people get so worked up about these rankings. We have no idea what the committee was truly thinking. LSU fans should be the happiest fans out there since this weekend will help their strength of schedule and boost their 'eye test' perception, if they win.
