Our 4th most popular sport is auto racing.
Canada's 4th most popular sport is Lacrosse.
So I guess it's a wash.
According to viewership numbers, surveys and Neilsen ratings we are...
1. NFL
2. Baseball
3. College Football
4. Auto Racing
5. NBA
Canada is...
1. Ice Hockey
2. Basketball
3. Soccer
4. Lacrosse
5. Rugby
If you analyze Television #'s and Google search popularity in ALL OF NORTH AMERICA...and not just the US.
There is the Big 5...
1. Football (college and Pro)
2. MLB
3. NBA
4. NHL
5. Liga MX
Teams ranked in total North American popularity...by viewership, merchandise sales and google searches...
1. Yankees
2. Red Sox
3. Cowboys
4. Lakers
5. Packers
6. Patriots
7. Steelers
8. Bears
9. Cubs
10. Football Giants
The rest are mostly NFL teams with the Celtics sprinkled in there.
The first NHL team shows up at #25...the Canadiens...as the the 25th most popular team in ALL OF NORTH AMERICA!
Canada might love the NHL more but North America certainly doesn't.

I don't get the hate for the NHL in the US. Hockey is awesome. Probably the best live sporting event to go to.
Plus the US has some great players (Kane probably being the most popular) and our Olympic teams are pretty good and show well.
If the NHL had the TV exposure that the other major sports have, I think it would be up there.
