Now you're just being combative just for the sake of being an a-hole.

Guess I need clarification. I feel like the ump was saying "let's go". Am I missing something?

Nah, you're not, I actually agree with you in that they were probably arguing two different things.

Even still, him not being in the box doesn't justify the boot IMO

And Harper's feelings weren't hurt? We can argue it the other way too.
Then maybe he should have been able to eject the ump.

I'm neutral on this, because I hate Harper and I also hate umps...but when told to get back in the box, why not just get back in the box?

Hudson was arguing with the dugout while Harper was in the box

Harper steps out while he's arguing

Hudson barks to get back in the box in which Harper then reminds him he was just in the box

His point is that blue will ring you up anytime they think that you are showing them up. Or make you wish you hadn't using other methods. The "miscommunicated" pitch out was one of the funniest player retaliations that I ever witnessed.

Straw that broke the camels back, IMO.

I think it's a tough position when you're constantly having to make judgement calls. And maybe you get one really wrong, but what can you do? You have to maintain the appearance of command. If you waver in that moment, the players and coaches will eat you alive. Afterwards, you can admit that maybe you got it wrong, and HOPEFULLY work to not let it happen again.

So when you have a player and coach arguing a strike call, even if you probably know you got it wrong, you can't let it stand. Shut them up and get the game going.

I'm not saying Williams was in the wrong to argue because that's his job as a manager to back up his players, and most of the time get in between the ump and the player to prevent them from ejected. Everyone has a role.

Then Harper needs to get back in the box, not mockingly tap it. You have to know that will get you the boot, right?

He was attempting to.

The ump told him to get in the box. Harper pointed at the box and the ump nodded. Harper proceeded to step into the box. Then got tossed for doing exactly what the ump asked.

Did Harper attempt to step back in the box while he got tossed? Yes or no, it is pretty simple.

So much fail in this thread, you can clearly see the people who hate Harper

The first mistake was when the pitch was called a strike which should have been called a ball...and while Harper did step out of the box after speaking his displeasure he did get back into the batters box BUT ump walked away from the plate, pulled off his face mask and then argued with Matt Williams...when the ump walks away to argue with the coach it is known that "time" is called thus not making it mandatory to stand in the batters box

It is clear that the ump had a hard on for Harper, if you can't see this you are just dumb

Fall back argument. Good play.

I don't hate Harper. Neither him nor the Nats matter much to the Cardinals IMO.

People are making it out to be this huge controversy, and it's not even close. None of this is surprising or shocking.

The ball was a lot closer than you guys are making it out to be, but I agree that there needs to be a review of umps who's strike zone calls are off the acceptable standard. If that K Zone is accurate at all, it's easy to get the data.

Most K Zones are using Pitchf/X, so I'd assume it was correct but it is still an assumption.

Harper's body language was basically "oh this box? Yeah I was in this box before you started being a little bitch. Are you done being a bitch? Ok I'll get back in the box now."

Whether that is toss-worthy is I guess up for debate. I say no way. Blue was being a bitch.

I didn't know if it equated to the first down line in football, where the announcers are always reminding us that it's not 100% accurate. Something created mainly for the TV audience.

Does anyone know if Harper said the magic word though? I'm still not sure after watching the replay he doesn't deserved to get tossed, because he said something. I think he would have been fine if he did not say anything.
