Brandon Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner and one of the most dominant starters in the game during a five-year stretch with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is officially retiring from baseball, according to his agents at Millennium Sports.

Webb, 33, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2009 because of shoulder problems. He had been pursuing another comeback attempt but announced his retirement Monday in a statement released by agents Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana.

His career was going at a Hall of Fame pace before his shoulder injury. Finished in the top 2 in the NL Cy Young voting 3 straight seasons and had a career ERA+ of 142, which is the 12th best in baseball history. It's a shame he could never return from his shoulder problems.

Best pitcher in baseball for a couple years.

That sinker fell off the fricking table. So nasty.

You're thinking of Brandon McCarthy.

IIRC, he didn't even have a huge contract yet either.

Good for him. Hopefully he has enough money to enjoy retirement at age 33.

He made $35.5 million over his career. He did ok.

Could've made A LOT more though

I hate that for him. He was great when he was healthy. UK player makes him a plus!

Dbacks refused to sign him to a big contract...props to them on knowing what was up.

Apparently he threw for over a dozen teams a week ago and nobody called him back. From what I understand, it was fairly obvious that it was over. It's a shame.

I love watching groundball pitchers, and he and Kevin Brown had the best sinkers that I've seen.

We MORE than made up for it with the contracts we shelled out to Russ Ortiz and Eric Byrnes.
