BTW Davis also converted Todd Christensen and drafted or developed Dave Casper, Raymond Chester, Ricky Dudley, and Zach Miller.
He knew what he was doing in the tight end department

Casper was an offensive tackle at Notre Dame.

That's how you got TE's - you wanted blockers first and then developed their catching ability to switch things up.

I mean Casper's biggest year receiving for the Raiders was 62 catches.

TE's weren't just an extra receiver.

62 receptions for a TE in the 70s and 80s was a shite load.

I think by his senior year he was established as a tight end and drafted as one.

Christensen at BYU and his stint with the Cowboys was a running back. Cannon as well of course.

Unnamed so far are Jackie Smith of northwestern st., who is best known for dropping a sure TD in the super bowl vs Steelers, but a perennial all pro with the Cardinals.

Ozzie Newsome was a very good tight end for the Browns and transitioned into one of the best front office men in football.

Yep. Ozzie Newsome was ahead of his time. He caught 89 balls in 83 and 84 and eclipsed 950 yards three times. He was a vertical threat at the position when they were still glorified tackles with athleticism.

Al Davis

Much like Darrell Waltrip, his greatness is overshadowed somewhat by his later life. At one time, Al Davis was probably the smartest SOB in pro football.

The best ALL-AROUND TE in NFL history is Jason Witten. He is a great blocker until Tony Gonzales and the other glorified WRs. Also he has only missed ONE game due to a broken jaw. His receiving numbers also are off the chart.

Jason Witten has missed ONE game due to injury and Gronk has missed how many seasons? The greatest QB in NFL history has been throwing to him while Witten had that scab Tony Romo! If Witten played for the Saints he would be the greatest TE ever according to this board! Jimmy Graham? WR! He couldnt block air and Drew Brees made him.

Not the best, but one guy that hasn't been mentioned that at least deserves to be is Greg Olsen.

Olsen has been overshadowed in the era of Gronkowski, Graham, Gonzalez, and Witten, but Olsen has had a great career and been very consistent. And knock on wood, he hasn't had injury problems like some guys and hasn't missed a game in years. He's 32 now and he could easily have another solid 5 or more seasons left.

Greg Olsen will go down as a top 10 all-time TE and wasn't mentioned til just now

Also, not best ever, but for a few years there with the Giants Jeremy Shockey was awesome and I loved watching him.
