This is kind of a tough position to gage. A lot of TE's in the 60's and 70's didn't put up huge stats but were excellent at their job.

Antonio Gates has to be up there. Tony Gonzalez too.

If Gronk can play 5 more FULL seasons I think he will go down as the GOAT. I think he already is in terms of ability and how unstoppable he is.

Gronk, the inarguable most complete tight end to ever play this game who also functions as the most uncoverable receiver in football

Probably Tony Gonzalez. He was a good to great blocker. They had an elite running game in Kansas City in addition to his great receiving. Gronk is great, but he's not asked to do a lot of run blocking. Also hard to tell how much of Gronk's play is bc of Brady and Belichick.

The craziest thing about Gronk is that he's not "injury prone" in the sense as someone like Derek Rose is. He's so damn dominant and physical its almost a byproduct of being a freak of nature.

Gronk is without a doubt the best TE of all time.
That being said, most teams would rather have Gates or Gonzales for their career given Gronks injury history.

Although Gronks injury history is mainly b/c he's so good, the only way for DB's to take him down in the open field is to take his legs out, which is the cause of the knee issues he's had.

It will be Gronk by the end of his career unless he gets a serious injury in the next two to 3 years

The top tier is
Winslow
Bavaro
Gonzalez
Witten
Gates
Mackey
Ditka
Casper

ETA:

It will be interesting what the HOF does with Heap

Between Gronk and Tony G. Depends what you value more.

I always liked Heath Miller. Big guy, good blocker with good hands.

Gronk is better; Gonzales more dependable.

Tony Gonzalez is easily the GOAT

Kellen Winslow
Antonio Gates
Rob Gronkowski

There are some old-time guys who probably could go up there... Mike Ditka, Dave Casper, John Mackey, etc. but I just don't think they are comparable to the new school guys. Athletes in today's age > athletes all time.

This is peak vs longevity argument.

If Gronk plays this way for a few more years, he's the best hands down. If he has a sharp decline soon, then it's up for debate. An argument can be made that he's the best right now, but it is an argument and not an indisputable fact.

Gonzalez was never as good as Gronk is now but he played for so long. I have to give it to him by default for right now. But I understand those saying Gronk given his current trajectory. We're imagining what Gronk could be at the end of his career vs what we know Gonzalez turned out to be and the retired guy is almost always at a disadvantage in those comparisons.

Hard to argue with this. If he's on the field, he's open. He's also an above average run blocker even though he isn't asked to do it often.

Gronk is the best blocking tight end in the game by a wide margin

It's definitely Tony Gonzales until Gronk breaks his records.

Elite compared to the rest of the league today. Sure. Elite compared to the all-time greats? Probably not. Some of those older guys were maulers.

In no way does this take away from Gronk's greatness. You should probably calm down.

15,127 yards & 111 touchdowns. For now there is only 1 correct answer.
