In fairness, McGwire hit more per season, that has to count for at least a little something.
Bonds was able to stay healthier and play 6 extra years. That obviously also counts for something.
Ichiro has more hits per season than pete rose....but I don't think many would argue that ichiro is the greatest hitter.

I think Ichiro is 2nd to Gwynn as best hitter ever in baseball, just not MLB due to his late start in the league.
The world really missed out on having him play his entire career in MLB.

I'd put Rose ahead of Ichiro. Higher OPS+, and a higher OBP. Ichiro also had the advantage of coming into the game during his prime, so no bad stats in those early years.
And of course, Gwynn ahead of both of them.

If we count Japan, Ichiro is far and away the best singles hitter in baseball history. It's just that the idea of the "best hitter" is some slap hitter without any power that is flawed. Barry Bonds is the best hitter ever. Full stop.

I'm really not trying to take anything away from a Gwynn or Ichiro, but some of the hit numbers are inflated by how little they walked. Granted, Gwynn still had a ridiculous career OBP, but generally speaking, people see and are enamored with the .340 batting average, but fail to realize a few other guys may have actually had a higher OBP, and that's even more important when we're considering primarily singles hitters.

Hold up. Ted Williams is the goat hitter of all time and it's no debate. Missed a couple seasons of his prime in the wars but won triple crowns before and after that.

Bonds
Bagwell is the best who hasn't been definitively linked to steroids

Ichiro was better and just as long. He just didn't come into the MLB until around 28 iirc.

You left off a guy with a lifetime average of .359 who had over 1,000 extra base hits. Any list of greatest hitters need to include Hornsby.
Posted on 7/29/15 at 2:13 pm to TigerintheNO
Hornsby was actually one of the first I was going to add I just felt like his overall power numbers were slightly too low

When Bonds was on his home run barrage, he was walked almost a 100 times. The next closest was in the 40's. If he would of been pitched to at least half of those walks he would of ended up with nearly 90 home runs. Steroids, naw. frick Bonds, McGuire, and I hate to say, Bagwell, and Caminiti were thick as thieves too.
