But you stat geeks also take it to the other extreme.

First of all, when has a middle reliever won a Cy Young because he stole somebody else's win with bad pitching and a furious comeback?

And second, if you are a starting pitcher, you start 30 games, and you only get six wins, does it really matter what your ERA was?

It's just like all these NFL stat geeks who bitch about Joe Flacco. Sure, he's not as "good" as Tony Romo. But he wins, and he has done it consistently. At some point when both guys constantly trend the way they do, you have to stop attributing it to luck.

yeah blame one guy out of 25

sure he's the one with the greatest influence on the outcome, but that shouldn't matter when assessing individual performance
