This is totally random, but are these two guys not the most virtually identical when it comes to QB stats? I have spent this last 15 minutes looking over their career accomplishments, I have still can't decide who was the better QB. I wanted to hear what everybody else thought.

Roger Staubach was a playmaker

One was the "field general" of the 1960s and the other was the "field general" of the 1970s.

I'm old enough that I saw them both play. Starr ran a more structured offense under Lombardi whereas Roger was given a lot more freedom and flexibility under Landry. They both won two Super Bowls and Starr won 5 NFL championships before they started playing the Super Bowl. And the best thing is both were gentlemen and class acts on and off the field.

I don't remember watching Starr play, but think he was a great system QB for what Lombardi did.
Staubach I did see play, and he was a true playmaker and one of the toughest competitors I have ever seen. He personified the Cowboys and Coach Landry.
I would give the edge to Staubach.

Staubach also had some of his career taken by the Navy.
Roger ran a more complex offense and was more of a difference maker.
Starr just won. He was the guy and his teammates knew it.

I think I saw Roger play against McNeese. He was playing for Pensacola Naval Air Station and I remember them playing the Cowboys in Lake Charles. My recollection is McNeese won.

The first memory of Roger playing was the Vikings game. He just had that flash about him. I remember everyone said Fran was better runner etc. But to me Roger ran when he needed and pulled games out of his arse. A sign of greatness, IMO.

Since the rules have changed so much over the years to favor offense, and in particular the passing game, the only fair way to compare quarterbacks from different eras is to see how their passing efficiency ratings compare to other quarterbacks of their era. Three years ago I used Excel to see how some of the NFL's notable quarterbacks compared to their peers. In no particular order, here's a list of some of these quarterbacks, followed by their career efficiency rating, the average NFL rating during their careers, and the difference between the two:
Manning, 94.9,78.7,16.2
Staubach, 83.4,62.8,20.6
Montana, 92.3,72.8,19.5
Brady, 94.9,79.2,15.7
Marino, 86.4,74.0,12.4
Starr, 80.5,64.4,16.1
Unitas, 78.2,64.1,14.1
Elway, 79.9,74.0,5.9
Young, 96.8,74.2,22.6
Brees, 92.1,79.5,12.6
Bradshaw, 70.4,65.4,5.0
Favre, 86.0,77.5,8.5
Stabler, 75.3,66.1,9.2

Green Bay had better teams during that time. Staubach was a slick playmaker with a great arm with way more talent than Starr. Starr was a "system" QB game manager.

You had to be under Lombardi or you were riding the pine. Or playing for another team.

Starr personified the old school quarterback.
Staubach was years ahead of his time. Like pistol Pete. He really paved the way for guys like Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, etc. Staubach literally IS the Cowboys.
The Dodger was loads more athletic and a better arm. He was better for football. I'd give him the edge.

Ok, but CO, suppose the protection breaks down. Staubach was superior to Starr in that regard. It's kind of like if Starr and Staubach were the same size, and AJ McCarron and Johnny Football were the same size, which one would you choose to be your QB?

Watch old Cowboy's games on youtube from the 1970's.
Roger could play today. Made defenders miss - when defenders could really rape you...and your receivers.
Staubach was legit as hell as an all-time any era QB.
