I was like 9 when this went down. why did he fire Jimmy Johnson again?

Because Jerry and Jimmy both had egos the size of Dallas, and there wasn't enough room for both of them. Also, Jerry didn't like when Jimmy didn't raise his glass toasting everyone who worked to put the Cowboy's team together.

quote:

During an NFL executives party Monday night at Pleasure Island in Disney World, Jones went to a table where Johnson was socializing with a few ex-Cowboys employees and toasted the team's success. Jones apparently felt snubbed and left in a huff.

quote:

He said he wasn't happy the way his toast was received. "I just wasn't satisfied with the toast and decided to toast someplace else. I guess when it comes to our success, I probably expect too much joy," Jones said. Johnson was at the table with two of his former assistants -- Washington Redskins head coach Norv Turner and Chicago Bears head coach Dave Wannstedt -- Phoenix Cardinals director of college scouting Bob Ackles and a former team administrator. Ackles had been fired by Jones, so the owner's toast created an awkward situation and he apparently was not warmly received by the group.

If Jerry didn't have such a stupid ego, he and Johnson would have won 5 Super Bowls together.

Lifelong Cowboys fan here. I hate jerry Jones. He fired Tom Landry on a golf course.

He has admitted numerous times that he handled firing Tom Landry poorly and that its one of his biggest regrets. He needed to fire him though. It was past time for a change and Landry needed to retire or be forced too.

You can't blame Jerry for firing Landry. Firstly, he needed to go. Second, that's the only reason Tex sold him the club.

Switzer is from a dirt poor family Crossett, AR in the 1940s. I think he grew up picking cotton and working fields with poor black folks...he's the real deal and more authentic than Jerry.

Jerry was a rich kid from Little Rock in the same era, but still has all those old timey sayings and charisma...I think some of it is a put on, but he talks just like anybody from that grew up in the South in those days. Anybody with grandparents around 75+ Probably all talk the same.

Umm...."rich' maybe compared to Switzer's background which was poorer than dirt but Jerry grew up in the Rose City suburb of N Little Rock. Yeah he went to LR Catholic but his family was NOT 'rich'. Go take a drive through Rose City. It's way worse now than when he was a kid but it wasn't the 'rich' area of central Arkansas. His parents were LOWER middle class working folks. I think his dad managed a grocery store or somesuch.

"Boys will Be Boys" details this stuff. GREAT read and hilarious. Talks about the Super Bowl Switzer 'coached'. Team hardly practiced the entire 2 weeks. Switzer's suite was a week long bacchanalia of women, booze, and hijinks. Larry Lacewell passed out on the floor one night and Switzer pissed on him (per others in the room). Switzer did not give a shite. Was happy just to be there and enjoying himself. Hilarious.

Also, Switzer supposedly was fckng Lacewell's wife for years. Lacewell supposedly knew and just kinda ignored it.

I don't blame Jerry for firing Landry. I completely agree it was time probably past time but I think he should have handled it more respectfully. Landry is a legend and deserved better.

When I got here, you told me there were 500 coaches who could win a Super Bowl with this team. Well I did it and there's 499 left out there [so go get one].

That's an awesome line

A friend's family in Dallas is Old Money there & he said that the majority of Old Money Folks in Dallas look down on Jerry as being New Money trash, mocking his background as well. Screw him, he has made the Cowboys into a joke, all that money & he still can't put together a decent team & has not in decades. Ask J.Johnson what he thinks of JJ as a person & a team president.

I watched the NFL Network piece on Tom Landry and although I think both Tom and Jerry knew it was time for a change, the way he was let go was beyond classless. There was a video of Tom cleaning out his office and he was basically ushered out of the complex after he was let go. Sad.

Switzer goes to shake his hand and Jerry's like, "nope, gimme that!"
