The #Braves today optioned RHP Ian Anderson and RHP Bryce Elder to Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta now has 50 total players in camp.

Had a slight hammy issue and is just now ramping up in spring.

I was joking about him being the darkhorse. He will for sure start the year out in AAA. But, wouldn't be surprised if he's in the rotation by May or June.

Ynoa, Matzek & Allard all will go on IL, so #Braves could recall Ian or Elder before OD if things change (don't have to wait if it's replacing injured player). But for now, don't have enough innings left in spring for all. Two prospects are the ones who distinguished themselves.

At this point, would be happy if Anderson can ever contribute to the big league roster. He seems totally lost.

His demeanor on the mound reminds me a lot of Folty.

I'll be shocked if he's not traded at the deadline.

Has Yates had one productive outing for us?

I don't think Ian ever pitches for the Braves again. He needs a change of scenery and the Braves need the 40 man spot for Shuster, who I think is going to be the #5 starter.

It's selling low, but I'm not sure it'll ever get better for him here.

The Braves are gonna need 7 or 8 guys over the course of the season in the rotation due to injury/performance, etc, that Ian will have a chance to prove himself one more time but I do think that this is his last shot.

You can make the argument that Ian is below the top 7 or 8.

We know Fried, Strider, Wright, Morton are the four locks, with Shuster and Dodd the two guys battling it out for the fifth spot.

So that's 6 right there.

Considering how last season ended and because he has more complete pitch arsenal, gotta imagine the front office favors Elder ahead of Ian despite both getting sent down to Gwinnett. And you also have to think they also still have more hope for Soroka getting healthy than Ian developing the slider.

There's your 8.

So it's basically Ian and Allard battling it out for 9 and 10.

In retort though now that I think about it, people said the same thing about Kyle Wright. The Braves didn't give up on him, so I think they will give Ian every chance.

Not the same thing at all.

Wright never had a spot before he got his. Ian got his spot, lost it, and then couldn't earn it back this spring. So much so in fact that the Braves are turning to two dudes who have never thrown a pitch in MLB for their 5th spot before they turn to him.

Also, Wright's issue was always command. Ian's issue is that he has two pitches, one is easier to fix/improve than the other.

I'm still gonna say that the Braves are gonna give him one last shot, whether he spends all year in AAA(like Kyle did) or is able to make.it back up but as long as he shows improvement.

Eh, he was in the rotation to start either 2018 or '19 IIRC. So he did have a spot and lost it.

It was 2019 and it was due to injury to someone (can't remember who) at the beginning of the year.

He and Bryse Wilson got some starts to open the year.
