No he is not. Baseline is 3 feet on either side of the white line (imaginary line between 2nd and 3rd). A runner can not run outside of that area to allude a tag or get an obstruction.
are you sure?

Can you point me in the right direction of the rule that says this

Boston starter Jake Peavy says he doesn't see how anyone agrees with that call “other than Cardinal fans.
Didn't his own manager say it was the correct call?

No, you're thinking of the rule that states that a runner cannot run more than 3 ft out of the established baseline to avoid a tag.

quote:

A runner?s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely;

quote:

Any runner is out when --
(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball

I think it makes more sense when you remember Craig slid into 3rd and then the ball was overthrown. This puts Craig's path to home a little on the inside of 3rd base as he rises.

That was such a horseshite call. Craig slid into third and the ball was thrown off the bag. What the hell was Middlebrooks suppose to do? Let the ball go by without attempting to snag it? Crawl out of the way when he was on the ground?

frick that ump and everyone defending that bullshite call

I know right? frick that noise. Rules should be ignored when they penalize people due to bad luck

I mean honestly I go back to the Tenn vs LSU football game in 2010, sure we had 13 (maybe even 15) players on the field but we only needed like 3 to stop the disaster of a play LSU ran at the last second so the ref should've just ignored the rule and let us win anyways. The other 11 guys on the field didn't even have anything to do with stopping the play!

frick that ref and frick anyone who defends that call!

Exactly why if there is no tag attempt the baserunner can run wherever the hell he wants. Stop trying to act like you know a rule that you clearly don't.
