Guys throw harder now and throw tons of breaking stuff/sliders
The older guys did NOT put the same amount of stress on their arms as guys do today.
FACT
Seems velocity would cause more strain but it isn't like pitchers back in the 50's and 60's were soft tossers they could reach the 90's.

I agree with this. Today's game is different. But I have seen time after time that a starter is in a groove in the 5th or 6th inning and the manager yanks him and they end up losing.

Braves were a great rotation.
But I'd put the the 1966 Dodgers as 1A - Koufax, Drysdale, Sutton, Osteen. They made the World Series with a mediocre offense - 12th in batting in the NL. They had the most wins of any team as pitching staff and the highest ERA.
And the Braves as 1B.

Watch Koufax throw and tell me how little stress he put on his arm.
He threw as hard as anyone...and retired early.
Koufax practically averaged 200 innings pitched per baseball season.
Twice he struck out 18 batters in a game.
In one year he went 25-5.
Name me a pitcher in the last 15 years that can match that?
Name me a pitcher who has started 30 games?

Um have you ever heard of a pitcher named Pedro Martinez? He put up a 1.74 ERA pitching at Fenway Park in the heart of the steroid era. He was a far better pitcher than Koufax.

The Greatest Pitching Rotation of All Time — and It’s Not Close

The 1997 Braves rotation of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and, er, Denny Neagle (hey, he won 20 games that year and was surprisingly really good) has a collective Value Over Replacement Player (or VORP) of 649.4. The next highest-scoring foursome, the 1956 Indians (Early Wynn, Herb Score, Bob Lemon, Mike Garcia) has a score of 562.8. In fact, the rotations that ranked 2nd through 10th all have scores clustered loosely around 500, ranging from 494.7 (the 1970 Cubs) to the Indians.
Which is to say, the difference in VORP between the 10th best rotation and the 2nd best (68.1 points) is less than the difference between No. 2 and No. 1 (86.6 points). (Also interesting: The storied 1971 Orioles rotation of Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson and Dave McNally — 20-game winners all — doesn’t even make the Top 10.)
