i wonder how much of this is due to the length limits

Simmons has never been one to put length limits on writers.

its the concept of the site though to try to cater to the ADD generation. Each article has a footnote that tells you how long it takes to read each article, and none of them go longer than 5 minutes. Even his own articles are shortcutted because he wants to stay relavant to the 18-30 crowd he made his career off of, but now is out of his range. But thats silly to me. Theres still a big base to hit that are 25-50 that hes perfect for but is a alienating on this site that comes off as you mom posting 4 year old memes on facebook

Can we start threads 3 times a week to recap these episodes?

Hell, Slate might have ridiculous arguments, but they at least back those arguments up with something resembling a coherent thought and some evidence.
Highjack but I saw the MOST ridiculous Slate argument about how it was okay that Lena Dunham abused her 6 year old sister yesterday...

quote:

According to Dunham, her sister was the one crawling into her bed, and Grace was asleep when the masturbation happened—so Dunham, who was at least 13 at the time, was essentially masturbating in private.
wtf

See, that's a totally ridiculous and unpersuasive argument... but at least there was a shred of evidence. I mean, it's morally revolting and never should have been written, much less published, but it's STILL more interesting than what's on The Ringer.

And that's the problem with the Ringer... it's boring. Never once have I finished one of the articles and felt like I had learned something, or my perspective slightly changed, or even it made me mad enough to make a counter argument in my head.

While were on the subject of bad journalism

First take is on at the resturaunt I'm at and they have an entirely female panel discussing whether there is a double standard because the WNBA fined those players and the NBA didn't or something like that

I'm sure that will lead to a balanced and healthy discussion!

I always forget the WNBA exists now that I cut cable.

There are a few good articles on the Ringer, but it's nowhere near Grantland quality.

The article on Lonzo Ball and his family was one of the only articles on the site where I actually learned something. The NBA and college basketball stuff is worse than if the best posters on the MSB blogged about it. I also think M/TV people could do a better job than their film critics.

Music journalism is generally fricking terrible anyways, so it's par for the course with them.

Favreau is a great political writer. Bryan Curtis not so much.

Football and baseball coverage has been their biggest strength so far, I think.

I tend to agree with the Ringer's politics, but the site is still generally awful because the articles are amateurish, short, and not terribly well-reasoned

Fully agree.

The truth is that the vast majority of talented writers are left wing. There's a reason why Breitbart and similar sites aren't respected outside of the poliboard cadre.

Deadspin is more overtly left wing and it was far worse than Grantland. It's also far better than the Ringer even with their parent company's issues.

Anyone read an article by Mark Titus yet? I know he's a damn good writer but haven't checked to find anything by him yet

He's either written 1 article or just a brief funny announcement with Shea Serrano.

I know he went through depression in the past couple years and gained like 40 pounds, and didn't write for months on end. He said he's doing much better but I imagine he has periods without much productivity.

The MLB podcast is awful. They put out a new one once a week and this weeks they spend half the pod breaking down 2016 baseball movies. WTF?? We are mid way through the season with trade season heating up and you spend time breaking down 2016 baseball movies?

That's just the example for this weeks pod, all the other ones they talk about shite that are similar to offseason topics while in baseball season. It just sucks. I don't know it could just be because I don't care for Mallory Rubin.

I've fooled around on the website a few times but wasn't very impressed with it. It's pretty disappointing because I had high hopes for The Ringer but so far have been so disappointed. I'm still holding out hope that they work out the kinks and it will be better in the future though.

Hyden was by far their best music critic. I'll never forget when they were having their best song tournament, and it was the indie rock guy formerly from the Onion who was the only one who would defend Hey Ya! for being generally awesome precisely because every different kind of person likes it (people were calling it wedding reception song and Hyden was like, YES! Know who goes to weddings? EVERYBODY). It also showed the inherent problem with Popitimism, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, he's now writing books and for other sites, and the Ringer's music coverage is just nonstop fawning over Kanye and Beyonce. And I like Beyonce but they are clearly terrified to even offer her minor criticism.

You can hear the Splooge come out of Chris and Ryan of The Watch whenever they talk about Kanye. He is a god to them.

Nowhere near as good as Grantland. 95% of it is useless garbage and Simmons himself doesn't write enough articles.
