but I scrolled down to Simmons's take since I typically enjoy his writing. His "take" including bitching about how she only dated white guys.
Are you serious? What a fricking tool. He's on the verge of going full SJW.

I agree on the SJW stuff. The Alton sterling article was a joke. 0 articles about the slain police officers
And the author of that article, Micah Peters, who is from BR, who propped Sterling up as some great guy couldn't even muster a single tweet about the cops killed in BR.

Best podcast out there
Agreed. I'm addicted. I'm about to start today's episode. Can we start threads 3 times a week to recap these episodes?
By the way, Pardon My Take is #1 on itunes now.

I'll sum up the entire article for those who didn't see it
"ALTON SOLD ME BOOTLEG CDS WHEN I WAS A KID SO OBVIOUSLY HE WAS A GREAT GUY"

I'm also not sure that they have found their line-up/voice for that pod yet
I think that's true across the board for the site.
It's important to remember that Grantland was pretty unremarkable when it launched. It took that site to a while to get it's sea legs, to find more/the right talent (Hipster Runoff was an early Grantland contributor), and for it's largely unknown group of writers to find their voices.
I dont mind the pods that much. But I only listen to NBA, BS, and 1600 regularly. Then select Watch, Jam Session, and tech. I thought the Facebook one was the most interesting Tech pod they've done. Not because of political stuff, but more how people use Facebook v how Facebook wants to be used (whether that's newsfeed or facebook live moderation/censorship).
It has been a big letdown so far. I thought The Ringer would be a better version of Grantland since he has more freedom now, but it's been the exact opposite. I'll scan through the headline articles to find something to read but most are unappealing. Often the writers come off as "trying too hard" to either be funny or ram their point down your throat. His podcast has almost become nonexistent since the show aired last month. The show has been pretty solid so far with very good guest appearances. Hopefully the pod picks up during fball season. I'm not too hopeful about the site. I'll stick with SBNation among others

I went into that pod really excited for the discussion you described. I left really disappointed though.
I think the line that stood out to me was one woman saying something to the effect of, "Even more upsetting to me than the people vehemently disagreeing with me were people who just wanted to talk about movies or funny stuff."
How ridiculous is that you are disappointed that everyone in the world didn't get dragged into BLM v Blue Line bullshite on Facebook?
Also a lot of conversation seemed to be "How dare Facebook not want to be a social justice platform?" Which is never what Facebook was intended to be.

I really liked grantland, always thought the articles were well written with strongly backed arguments or ideas
Agree

My other issue is how short the damn articles are. I know this was a strategic move by their part but it feels like another attempt by Simmons to act younger than he is. The articles never have any substance
Agree
I've found that the writing is subpar, the jokes don't land, and it's lacking the analysis/depth that made Grantland special.
Plus no Rembert

The SJWs approach is clearly a product of being around people that completely agree with you at all times.

I agree. One of the last places I want any sort of analysis on anything is Facebook. Bemoaning a lack of hot button issue talk on facebook is silly to me. It's only the biggest site in the world- some people will crusade for whatever they believe in, others will keep posting cat gifs. You can find whatever you want there. Internet gonna internet
Same time, the power of Facebook Live, like live tweeting, is something that seems inescapable to me.

That's fair, but I looked at it less as commentators pushing an agenda, than Facebook users utilizing the product in ways the company didn't anticipate and being reticent, for some logical business reasons, to embrace these user innovations.
I think that is an interesting discussion. Maybe they didn't quite get to on that pod, but it is one that is brewing. If facebook is controlling/manipulating what articles you read or what videos can be live streamed, they should be very, very transparent about how they make these decisions. And right now, they just aren't

Yes, it's the best
It's trash. Simmons goes on the cheap, hires young writers no respectable place would want and this is what you get.
Bill craves acceptance from the young crowd so this shouldn't be surprising. If someone under 30 has opinion, Bill can't agree with it more.

I tend to agree with the Ringer's politics, but the site is still generally awful because the articles are amateurish, short, and not terribly well-reasoned. I'll leave the Alton Sterling one alone, because at least that tried to humanize the victim of a national news story. There was an identifiable point of view and a coherent argument there.
But take something non-political like their Mark Wahlberg piece. The author argues his performances are either great, bad, or a perfect combo of the two. OK, interesting premise, but he spend the entire article talking about the one Wahlberg movie no one has seen (and makes no case for you to see it), and then proceeds to dump a chart on the reader. No justification, just complete bullshite pulled out of his a-hole. It's the very definition of hack work.
They are incapable of making a coherent argument. They assume you agree with all of their premises, which makes set up entirely unnecessary in their eyes. But that's what writing is: convince me. They preach to the choir and want to be congratulated for being such truth tellers. They take way too many shortcuts in their articles to convince me of anything.
Hell, Slate might have ridiculous arguments, but they at least back those arguments up with something resembling a coherent thought and some evidence.

i don't read the ringer but this is a terrible way to write articles

i wonder how much of this is due to the length limits. sounds like they just remove the parts of the articles to create the base of their argument, assume you agree, and then move onto a "conclusion"

This is exactly what they do. They tell you the conclusion in the title, then set it up for a paragraph, and two sentences later boom conclusion repeated and the articles over.
So its basically every paper i wrote in the 7th grade
